ITV This Morning interrupted for Nicola Sturgeon's resignation speech

This Morning was interrupted from its usual programming to break to Nicola Sturgeon's resignation speech.

The First Minister held a press conference at Bute House in Edinburgh and announced she would be stepping down from the role after eight years. Hosts Dermot O'Leary and Josie Gibson, who have replaced Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield for the week, switched to the ITV news team to give viewers the latest on the breaking story.

In her announcement, Sturgeon said: "In my head and in my heart I know that time is now, that it is right for me, for my party and for the country. And so today I am announcing my intention to step down as First Minister and leader of my party."

Josie and Dermot discussed the breaking news with ITV's political correspondent Harry Horton about the resignation. He explained that in the time Nicola had been FM there had been five UK Prime Ministers and said she had been "hugely successful at the ballot box in Scotland".

Harry noted that Nicola had faced 'short term issues' in recent months as she tried to push through the Gender Recognition Act, before ultimately being blocked by the UK government.

In the announcement, Sturgeon defiantly said she was not stepping down due to these setbacks and acknowledged that "part of serving well" is to know when the time is right to stand down.

Dermot apologised to This Morning chef Phil Vickery as he was in the middle of his segment, telling the hosts and viewers at home all the hints and tricks for the best steamed syrup pudding.

Phil said: "You add your flour, in that goes... I have sieved that..." He added: "You want to get it finer. Put a bit of vanilla extract in there like that..." as Dermot asked: "Is that self raising flour?" Phil told him: "It is self raising flour."

"Right, sorry," said Dermot as Phil said: "No, don't say sorry. No, no. Absolutely not. You want to whip this together, and like I say, you can get away with being quite brutal."

He added: "We are a little bit short of time because you ran over with your interview there..."

"Sorry," said Dermot as Phil replied: "No, no. It's fine." He then added: "I was going to cook it in real time but now that won't happen. So let's put this in pots here..."
