ITV This Morning doctor issues mask advice amid surging covid cases

A doctor on This Morning issued advice on facemasks amid surging coronavirus cases.

Dr Zoe Williams shared the advice on yesterday's edition of ITV's flagship daytime programme. The medical expert was joined by Professor Karol Sikora as they discussed the dangers around the new variant of coronavirus.

XBB1.5 is an offshoot of Omicron and has become prevalent in other countries. Dr Zoe explained why the new variant is a cause of concern.

She said: "Some of the mutations mean it is more likely to be able to evade immunity from previous infections and immunisations." However, Dr Zoe eased fears as she explained the new variant had not yet become the prevalent strain in the UK.

She said: "One thing that people shouldn't be too concerned about is it's not been shown to give more severe illness so you're not more likely to be hospitalised if you get this variant. It is one to watch and at the moment, only 4% of cases in the UK, up to December 17, are this particular variant but it may be more prevalent and it is one to watch. "

The UKHSA has advised wearing masks and Dr Zoe issued advice on when people should wear a face covering. She said: "At the moment, we've been advised to consider wearing masks like these. If you're unwell, coughing and sneezing and are on a crowded bus, it is common courtesy.

"This will not completely stop transmission but it will reduce it if you're actively spewing out viruses. If you're unwell and are able to wear one of these without causing you discomfort or you can't wear them for medical reasons.

"If you're someone who is clinically vulnerable and you need to go out and about but you need to protect yourself then consider upgrading to a [FFP2 protective mask]."

Professor Sikora admitted he was nervous about the variant as he added: "I think it's too early to push the mask button and make it compulsory. I think it's very much an individual decision."
