ITV The Chase's Bradley Walsh criticised by viewers after he 'mocks' Welsh language

Viewers watching ITV's The Chase have been left cringing after host Bradley Walsh attempted to speak Welsh, after a contestant told him she spends much of her free time learning the language. Beka, who hails from Nottinghamshire, studied at Bangor University and recently began learning Welsh after deciding she wanted to move back to north Wales and buy a house there.

After welcoming Beka to the stage to answer the first round of general knowledge questions before facing Anne Hegerty - aka The Governess - in a bid to beat her and stay in the game, Bradley asked the HR assistant what she did to relax.

Beka said: "I've just started learning Welsh, actually. On Skype," to which Bradley erupted with a "Bore da!" Laughing, Beka replied: "Bore da!" before the show's host asked her how she was finding her new hobby. "It's alright. I can't have a conversation yet, but I can read and write in Welsh!" Beka replied. You can watch a clip from the episode at the top of this article - and for more TV news, go to this page of our website.

Taking this in, Bradley asked Beka what had led to her wanting to learn the language, and Beka explained that she wants to move back to Wales and loved living in north Wales when she was a university student.

"It's just so pretty there," she added, discussing her former home town of Bangor. In response, Bradley seemed to attempt to speak Welsh - but confused Beka in the process. "I don't know [what you're saying]! This is going great," she said.

Not fussed by her reaction, the 62-year-old 'Breaking Dad' star continued the programme by asking what she would do with the money if she were lucky enough to win - and, of course, she said: "I want to buy a house. I want to buy it in Wales."

This led to Bradley, once again, vocalising words and sounds that seemed to be him attempting Welsh. Perplexed, Beka gave him a thumbs up and said: "Iawn. It means 'Ok' in Welsh."

Appearing exacerbated, Bradley joked: "I was speaking Arabic!"

"Oh, ok. That's why I didn't get it," Beka said innocently.

Throughout the round, viewers watched on as Bradley continually pretended to speak Welsh, causing a flurry of giggles throughout the studio. Later in the show, Anne welcomed Beka to the next round of the quiz show by saying: "Croeso, Beka. That means 'Welcome'."

She added: "Well, this is cute. We've got a contestant learning Welsh and a host who struggles with English!"

After Beka's success in reaching the final, Bradley wished her luck in the next round by saying: "Croeso, Bore Da," before Anne chimed in saying the names of two Welsh towns: Pontypridd and Abertillery.

Viewers weren't too pleased with Bradley's gibberish-sounding outbursts throughout the episode, with many taking to Twitter to voice their disdain.

One user wrote: "Mocking an entire nations native language there. Typical f*****g English. #TheChase"

Another said: "Bet Brad wouldn’t be allowed to take the p*** out of any other language like he did with Wales and Ireland #thechase"

A third added confused: "Why's Brad speaking Spanish?"
