ITV The Chase host Bradley Walsh's rise to fame, family life and future TV role

Bradley Walsh has become a national treasure - and his career has come a long way from his days entertaining at Pontins.

Bradley has been a presence on our screen for decades from his iconic role as Danny Baldwin in Corrie to being one of the most notable game show presenters in history.

Speaking about his career, Bradley shared a piece of advice he was given during his early days.

He said: "A massive piece of advice I was given earlier on in my career was 'Whatever you do, the easiest part of show business is giving up - don't'.

"And seriously, when I got a knock back, I kept going and kept going."

As well as his career family life is also incredibly important to Bradley, with him regularly saying how much his wife and son mean to him.

We decided to take a look back at Bradley's career and his home life before a new season of Beat The Chasers starts.

Bradley started his career as a jet engineer for Rolls-Royce.

In an interview with the Mirror, Brad admitted he was not one of the sharpest at school and lived up to his nickname “Wing-it” by passing three of his eight O-levels – English, maths and art - with no revision.

He said: “That was enough to get me into Rolls-Royce. I did an apprenticeship there. Ironically that closed down and became the Harry Potter film studios.”

Football dreams

When he was 18, Brad become a professional footballer for Brentford after being spotted by a talent scout.

A string of ankle fractures ended his professional football career when he was just 22, leading him to find work as a bluecoat at Pontins in Morecambe.

Start in television

Brad had his first breakthrough when supporting singer Leo Sayer in 1985.

He was then invited on The Des O’Connor Show, resulting in a tour with Dame Shirley.

In 1997 he presented Wheel of Fortune for ITV before turning his hand to acting.

Acting

Debra Stephenson and Bradley Walsh co-starred on Coronation Street (ITV)

His first acting slot was a minor role in the Channel 4 series, Lock, Stock...

Returning to ITV, Brad appeared in Night and Day and The Bill before landing his iconic role in Coronation Street.

He also went on to star in Law and Order: UK, as well as a coveted role on Doctor Who as companion Graham O'Brien which he finished this year.

The Chase

But perhaps what many people know Brad for is hosting The Chase.

Since 2009, Brad has ruled the game show world - beating rivals Pointless on the BBC.

Singing

Having been inspired by Alexander Armstrong, Brad released his album Chasing Dreams.

This was the biggest selling debut album by a British artist in 2016, outselling albums by former One Direction member Zayn Malik, Stockport band Blossoms and Jack Garratt.

A string of presenting and acting gigs lead to reported earnings of £8.5 million last year, with his wage boosted by his production company Wingit Productions.

The 59-year-old runs Wingit Productions with his wife, Donna, and son Barney was made a director on March 31 of this year.

Bradley's wife Donna Derby is somewhat of an icon in her own right.

She rose to prominence for her work on several Miss World beauty pageants and for starring in Robert Palmer's music video, Simply Irresistible.

Back in 1987, she featured in six episodes of The Kenny Everett Television Show.

Donna married Bradley in 1997 and over the years, The Chase host has opened up on how much his wife means to him.

He told the Express : "I wouldn't swap my missus for the world. Donna isn't just beautiful, she's the most fantastic wife and mother."

Bradley also credited Donna for having a positive impact on his career, admitting she was the reason he took the role on Coronation Street.

He told our sister site the Mirror : "It's because of her I signed with Coronation Street.

"She's the one who recognised what it could do for me even though it would mean being apart."

Bradley's son Barney

Bradley's son Barney was born in London on December 2, 1997.

His mum is English actress, former dancer, and choreographer, Donna Derby. His parents have been married since 1997.

Aspiring actor Barney has a half sister, Hayley, who is Bradley's daughter from a previous relationship with his ex-partner Debby Parker.

Barney, 22, seems to be following in his father's footsteps, with a few acting credits already to his name. Barney starred in Guy Ritchie's King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and the 2019 thriller Indulgence.

Barney also starred in an episode of Doctors and Law and Order UK, the latter of which his father is a star.

Earlier this year, the father and son pair starred in their own ITV reality series together, Bradley Walsh & Son: Breaking Dad.

Barney kept viewers updated on their antics on his Instagram page, regularly sharing videos of the father and son duo on the road.

He is quickly amassing his own following, boasting 96,000 followers on Instagram.

As well as acting and presenting, Barney is also a patron for the children's cancer charity Smiles With Grace.

Bradley's future projects

Bradley Walsh is set to star in a new television series, a six part comedy drama series The Larkins, which will star Bradley Walsh and Joanna Scanlan as the iconic fictional characters, Pop Larkin and his wife Ma.

The Larkins is a new television adaptation of H.E. Bates' novel The Darling Buds of May, written by acclaimed screenwriter Simon Nye - whose credits include Finding Alice, The Durrells and Men Behaving Badly - with the aim of capturing the warmth, optimism and escapism of the Larkin family for a modern generation.

Of his casting, Bradley Walsh said: "I'm thrilled to be asked to be part of this much loved and iconic series of stories.

"The warmth and affection that H. E Bates has generated through his books is so uplifting and I cannot wait to be part of the Larkin family. It’ll be a hoot."
