ITV The Chase contestant makes huge blunder on question about Wales

A contestant on The Chase made an unfortunate blunder when she was asked a question about a Welsh river.

Katherine from Leeds started her appearance on the ITV1 quiz show by telling host Bradley Walsh she would love to win some money so she could take her husband Russ and two daughters on a safari holiday. The 42-year-old marketing manager said she enjoyed singing in a choir in her spare time.

She had a shaky start in the Cash Builders round, managing to earn only £3,000. Among the questions she got wrong was: "If you have a poor memory, it can be compared to what kitchen utensil?" The correct answer was "sieve" but Katherine went for "sink" — prompting a jibe from The Chaser Jenny Ryan.

Jenny, also known as 'The Vixen', joked: "I think I know what went wrong with that Cash Builder. You've got a memory like a sink." With a smile Katherine replied: "We'll see."

Katherine's fortunes did improve in the head-to-head, managing to bring back £3,000 to her team. But a gaffe came when she was asked: "The River Usk flows for a part of its way through which national park?" The options were the Brecon Beacons, the Peak District and the South Downs.

The contestant opted for the South Downs, while Jenny correctly answered that it was the Brecon Beacons. The Usk, which is around 125km long, rises on the northern slopes of the Black Mountain in the west of the Beacons.

Katherine did give correct answers about airline jargon for offloading a passenger ("bumped") and the editing area of a film studio ("cutting room"). She was one of three contestants who made it to the final round, playing for £12,000 — Katherine joining the aspiring crime writer Ore from Leeds and pest controller Sinclair from Southend. But they lost resoundingly as The Chaser easily caught up to their 10 points with more than a minute to spare.

Walking away with nothing, Bradley said they had been a "delightful" team. Jenny's verdict was that they "needed to be pacier".

The ITV1 show, which has been running since 2009, airs from 5pm until 6pm on weekdays. You can read more stories about The Chase here.
