ITV's Vera cast flock to Gateshead estate for new series leaving residents delighted

Residents of a Gateshead housing estate and the staff at a local café have been left delighted by its appearance in the latest episode of Vera.

In February last year, Vera was unexpectedly pulled from ITV schedules midway through series 11, with fans of the long-running show confused by its disappearance, given the fact they knew there were two more episodes to come. Almost a year later, those episodes finally aired, with Vital Signs and The Way The Wind Blows, kicking off Vera's return to screens last month.

And now, just as fans get used to some Sunday night normality restored with Vera back in its 8pm slot, there are just two episodes left to go of the current run. Four episodes of series 12 will air on ITV,. with the second - For The Grace of God - going out on Sunday, February 5.

While every episode of Vera offers plenty of opportunities to do some location spotting, Sunday's show was particularly memorable for people in Newcastle and Gateshead, as a former serviceman was found dead on the Quayside. And, as well as DCI Stanhope's investigations leading her to the stunning Lit and Phil library, she was also in sleuthing action at Dunston Staiths, with scenes shot outside and inside one of the houses there and in the massively popular Staiths Café.

It would be fair to say that locals were very excited about getting to see the Staiths grab a share of the Vera spotlight. Sharing a few photos from behind the scenes, the Save Our Staiths Twitter account posted: "So, tonight's our night on Vera!" while the Facebook page for the café announced: "What’s that? Vera’s on tonight at 8pm? And part of it’s filmed in the café? That’s pretty cool…"

One customer replied: "love it when they film around Dunston and the river, in fact NE/Northumberland in general," with another reacting: "Amazing."

Local author and self confessed Vera obsessive D H Jarrett was also very excited to see the Staiths on the TV, taking to Facebook to write: "Being a crime drama fanatic, and living in the north-east, you can imagine that Vera is on my radar. I’m such a fan that our car is named after her - Vera the Volvo ) Sooo last year it was very exciting that they were filming on my doorstep !!!"
