ITV's Trigger Point is channel's highest rated drama of past year with 10 million watching launch

ITV had a big announcement to make about Trigger Point after viewers were left on tenterhooks over the cliffhanger at the end of its second episode.

After weeks and weeks of teaser adverts and the minutes to its launch ticking down on screen in the hours leading up to its launch, Trigger Point has fired on all cylinders as Line of Duty favourite Vicky McClure leads the cast as explosives officer Lana Washington.

Prior to the titles opening on the first part, Vicky warned her many Twitter followers that the next six weeks would be a 'bumpy ride,' and she wasn't wrong as the closing moments of episode 1 saw a huge explosion, which ended up killing Lana's colleague 'Nut', played by popular actor Adrian Lester.

His death was confirmed in the first few minutes of last Sunday's second episode, which ended with a thoroughly gripping ending as Lana battled to defuse a bomb as her colleagues shouted at her to get out of the building to save herself.

Just as the clock ticked down, credits rolled, leaving millions of hearts in mouths.

And, ahead of fans tuning in to find out Lana's fate, ITV were delighted to break the news that Trigger Point is officially its highest rated drama of the last 12 months, with 10 million viewers now watching its first episode.

A teaser for Sunday's third episode read: "A far-right group called the Crusaders claims responsibility for the mosque attack, declaring it is in revenge for the Westhaven bombing, while counter-terrorism officers scramble to identify the bomber from CCTV footage.

"Working with the bomb data centre, Lana finds a forensic link between the explosives used at both sites - suggesting it might be the same bomber."
