ITV's Soldier Soldier: Where the cast are now, from personal battles to life on a remote Welsh farm

ITV's Solider Soldier was the peak of 90s television. It made names (and musical careers) for Robson Green and Jerome Flynn, and Loose Lady Denise Welch.

The drama followed the lives of the officers and men of the King's Own Fusiliers regiment, during their home lives, training exercises and battles and ran from 1991-1997.

After a decline in viewing figures (following the departure of now pop sensations Robson and Jerome), 1997 saw the decision to end the drama after seven series.

The stars of the show have gone one to do very different things since the series finale.

Here is where they are now:

Jerome Flynn played Lance Corporal Patrick Paddy Garvey.

While Solider Solider was not Jerome's first acting job, it was certainly the one where he made his name.

After five successful seasons in the show, and a new music career launched with co-star Robson Green, Jerome all but vanished from showbiz life.

At the height of his fame, Jerome went to India for a two-week retreat before moving into a commune in North London with Andrew Cohen's Enlightenment movement.

Jerome described it as a "very intense spiritual life" and claimed it was "equivalent to being a monk for eight years".

After his hiatus, Jerome took on the role of Bronn in HBO's Game of Thrones, as well as playing Det. Sgt. Bennet Drake in ITV's Ripper Street.

Jerome now lives on a remote Welsh farm in Pembrokeshire and meditates daily in a special shed.

Fusilier David "Dave" Tucker - Robson Green

Robson Green played Fusilier David "Dave" Tucker.

His role in the show catapulted Robson to fame in his twenties after the huge success of the TV series. But as his fame grew, he struggled to cope with all the attention. He eventually would tell of his battle with drink and drugs.

More recently, Robson has taken roles in Granchester and Geordie Keating, and as Rob Scotcher in Waterloo Road.

Robson says that he now shuns the celebrity lifestyle.

"I don't like being classed as a celebrity," he said. "I'm a normal actor who's survived," he told The Mirror.

He currently lives in his native Northumberland with partner Zoila Short.

Joy Wilton- Annabelle Apsion

Swansea University presents honorary degree to actress Annabelle Apsion (Matthew Horwood)

Annabelle Apsion played civilian Joy Wilton, though younger readers might recognise her as Monica Gallagher from the TV show Shameless.

Annabelle features in the first five seasons of Solider Soldier, but before her acting career began, she studied Russian and Politics, and then English and Drama at Swansea University.

Annabelle launched her acting career from the city, preforming in plays with her university pals.

The University awarded an honorary degree to Annabelle in 2019 at the degree ceremony for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Marsha Stubbs - Denise Welch

Denise now starts in Hollyoaks (Handout)

Denise Welch played the role of civilian, Martha Stubbs.

Denise was only in the series for two of its seven seasons, but she had to fight to get the role. Denise recalled how she had to pretend to be her friend to land the job, as the casting director had specified they didn't want any more Geordies in the show, and Denise hailed from Tynemouth.

Following on from Soldier Soldier, Denise has appeared in several long running TV shows such as Benidorm, Coronation Street and Hollyoaks, and is, of course, a fan favourite on Loose Women.

Donna Tucker- Rosie Rowell

The Newcastle-raised actress ran away to London at 16, living in squats while attending the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama.

Rosie Rowell also starred as Eileen Callan in Channel 5 soap Family Affairs, while most recent acting credits include The Bill, Casualty and narrating documentary series Dispatches.

Corporal Nancy Thorpe - Holly Aird

Holly also starred in Waking the Dead (ITV)

Holly Aird played the girlfriend, wife and ex-wife of Paddy Garvey, Corporal Thorpe. While her first first acting role was in 1981, she really became known for playing Nancy.

Since then she starred has as Frankie Wharton in Waking the Dead, which she left after four seasons to concentrate on her family, and often voices BBC natural history projects.

More recently, Holly Aird has taken on the role of Francoise in A Discovery of Witches and has reprised her role of Laura Merriman in Casualty.

Captain Jeremy Forsythe - Ben Nealon

Ben Nealon is without doubt best known for playing Cpt Jeremy Forsythe in seasons four to seven of the show.

He has since been in TV series such as Bugs, Casualty, The Bill, I Shouldn't Be Alive, Doctors and EastEnders as well as Indian films Lagaan and Mangal Pandey: The Rising.

Outside of his acting career, Ben Nealon has been involved in the clean water charity Pump Aid since he met Ian Thorpe, Amos Chitungo and Tendai Mawunga whilst filming in Zimbabwe in 1998. He convened the first trustees meeting in January 1999 and is currently the Development Director.

Sargent Tony Wilton - Gary Love

Gary Love played Sargent Tony Wilton for four seasons, until he was killed off in 1994 in a bombshell episode.

Gary was discovered when he was 12 years old, by Sir Cameron Mackintosh (Les Miserables) who immediately gave him the acting role of ‘Artful Dodger’ in ‘Oliver’.

Since his acting days, Gary has turned to directing, and was recently nominated for ‘Best Director’ for his debut feature film ‘Sugarhouse’ starring Andy Serkis at the Edinburgh Film Festival.

Gary is now living in Los Angeles working with some ‘A’ list Actors & Writers developing high-end drama projects.
