Matt Hancock made an appearance on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday (January 31) where he was quizzed by hosts Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley. The MP, who made a shock appearance as a contestant on I'm A Celebrity last year, was grilled about his TV appearance as well as his role as the former health secretary.
After it was announced that Matt had given just 3% of his £330,000 I'm A Celeb fee to charity, host Susanna Reid questioned him as to why he'd gone back on his promise to give the full amount. During the ITV breakfast programme, Susanna asked: "You gave £10,000 out of £330,000, why not give all of it to charity?"
The MP for West Suffolk responded: "I gave a substantial amount. I think it's still decent and the money I donated is more than my MP salary". But unhappy with his answer, Susanna pressed: "Couldn't they have benefitted from more of your fee rather than £10,000 out of a quarter of a million?".
Elsewhere in the interview, which viewers have described as a 'car crash', Susanna quizzed Matt Hancock on whether he broke the Covid guidelines during his role as health secretary.
"It doesn't feel like I got away with it Susanna," the MP said, "of course it wasn't breaking the law because the legal rules weren't in place. That's why I wasn't fined."
The host then jumped in: "But there was a ban on gathering indoors? Did you receive a fine?."
Matt responded: "No because what I did wasn't against the law, but I did break the guidelines and I resigned, and I did take accountability."
But it was later in the programme when Matt Hancock caused a stir after being quizzed about his plans for the future.
When asked by Richard if his future is in showbiz, he responded: "I'm not going to stand as an MP but one of the things I'd love to do is documentaries on matters that I think are important."
Then asked by Richard, 'what are you', Matt quipped: "Well I have been a politician and I'm clearly still in the public eye. I'm going to spend 2023 working out what to do next."
Susanna then asked: "Do you want to sit where Richard's sitting?" to which he laughed and replied: "I think you do a brilliant job at it Richard."
"Well that wasn't a no," said Susanna, "Do you want to be a host of Good Morning Britain is that what this is about?".
During the anchor, Lorraine Kelly then warned Richard that his job may be at risk.
Appearing live from the studio ahead of her show, Lorraine shook her head and said: "I thought you showed great restraint there. Richard, I'd be worried for your job, he's coming after you. He didn't say no."
