ITV's Kate Garraway 'emotional' over last phone call with Fiona Phillips before Alzheimer's diagnosis

Kate Garraway became emotional on Thursday's Good Morning Britain, as the host discussed the last conversation she had with her former colleague Fiona Phillips, before she went public with her Alzheimer's diagnosis earlier this week.

It was on Tuesday night that Fiona, famous for hosting GMTV with Eamonn Holmes for many years, revealed to The Mirror that she was battling the disease, a condition that has already hit her family hard, due to her mum, dad and uncle suffering from it. Fiona said: "It's something I might have thought I'd get at 80 but I was still only 61 years old. I felt more angry than anything else because this disease has already impacted my life in so many ways; my poor mum was crippled with it, then my dad, my grandparents, and my uncle. It just keeps coming back for us."

ITV stars were quick to offer their support to Fiona, with the likes of Susanna Reid and Lorraine Kelly praising her as they took to the air on Wednesday, before Loose Women star Coleen Nolan said she 'wanted to sob' at hearing Fiona talk candidly about her Alzheimer's, given that her mum had it as well.

And on Thursday, as she returned to Good Morning Britain, Kate opened up about the last time she spoke to Fiona,. only last week, completely unaware of what she was going to.

Speaking to her ITV colleagues, Kate explained "The last conversation I had with her, which was only a few weeks ago, what she was doing was talking to me about Derek – full of love for Derek, very close to Derek – and thinking about me dealing with Derek. Of course, I now think that she must have had in her mind that she would come to a place where Martin and her sons were going to be taking care of her.'

Kate added: "It makes me feel emotional thinking about how that must have been going through her mind and still is."
