ITV's British Soap Awards anger viewers as results made public before show

British Soap Awards had one major issue with this year's show the full list of winners had been made public by ITV days before the ceremony actually aired on television.

The Soap Awards have been a staple of ITV's calendar for decades now, with the categories voted for by both a panel of industry experts and fans at home. A lot of the ceremonies have been pre-recorded over the years, before airing on ITV the following week.

However, for the last few years, the event has been shown live, meaning that there was no chance of any of the results leaking before viewers got a chance to find out. That definitely was not the case with the 2023 awards, as the full list of winners was released by ITV late on Saturday night after the ceremony took place in Salford, with the results swiftly being shared online.

With Jane McDonald as host, Winners this year included Coronation Street's Charlotte Jordan for Best Dramatic Performance, with the soap's Acid Attack storyline receiving the prizes for Best Single Episode and Scene of the Year, while the Outstanding Achievement accolade went to Emmerdale's Mark Charnock.

The results have also been discussed on various TV shows over the last few days, as well as one social media accounts of some of the shows involved, including this year's Best Soap winner EastEnders and that meant, unless they'd been doing trying very hard to avoid any spoilers, a lot of people wanting to tune into watch the Soap Awards on Tuesday night, already knew the identity of at least some of the winners.

Taking aim at ITV on Twitter, one viewer blasted: "What's the point in televising the British Soap Awards when all the results are made public in advance and it's shown on TV a few days later? Part of the interest of soap fans is watching to see who wins, particularly the best soap at the end. @ITV show it live!"

Also annoyed at how this year's event had been handled, another tweeted at the weekend to write: "itv are so dumb for not airing the british soap awards live tomorrow. talking about “find out on tuesday”. we are in 2023. the results will get leaked," with a third responding: "I’ve tried my best to stay clear of most spoilers but still think it was magic when it went out live on a Saturday night. Would be good if ITV considered doing that again for next year."
