ITV Our House's Martin Compston reckons Scottish accent 'helps' with womaniser role

Martin Compston is back on our TV screens tonight in brand new ITV drama Our House, based on the book by the same name.

The Greenock -born actor plays Bram Lawson in the series alongside Downton Abbey's Tuppence Middleton, who plays Fiona Lawson, his estranged wife.

The BBC Line of Duty star told The Times that the Scottish accent helps him portray the "likeable" ladies man for his role.

“You’re stretching the realms of fantasy that you have all these gorgeous women throwing themselves at him with me playing him,” Compston, 37, says.

“But I was adamant that he couldn’t be sleazy, he had to have real charm. There had to be a reason why these women gravitate to him. So I think the Scottish accent helps.”

“He’s on such a downward spiral for four episodes,” Compston says. “Every day you’re breaking down and coming home at night [from filming] it can’t not seep into you a little bit.”

Martin discussed his new role with the Radio Times and said that, despite his actions, he is also a "nice guy".

"On the page, he's an absolute b******," admits Compston.

"The producers have all been very kind because they said that's one of the reasons they came to me because you have to make him likeable.

"As an actor, as I play the scenes I also have to remember some of the stuff he's done."

The drama is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Louise Candlish, and the thriller promises to have viewers on the edge of their seat.

The four-part series is adapted by Simon Ashdown from the international best-selling novel and produced by Red Planet Pictures.
