ITV newsreader recalls terrifying encounter with Raoul Moat amid manhunt

ITV newsreader Emma Murphy has told of her brush with Roaul Moat, as the killer was hunted by police officers.

A manhunt was underway back in 2010 for Moat after he killed one person and injured two others.

And while tonight's Manhunt: The Raoul Moat Story recounted how police had taken care to ensure the safety of media flooding the town of Rothbury, Emma came very close to Britain's most wanted man.

Chatting to the documentary, Emma explained: "I was just heading up the road to get in my car.

"As I was walking up the road I saw this very tall guy walking towards me.

"It was just the two of us as we came towards each other and I thought, 'Oh, gosh, he looks really like Raoul Moat, he must have had a really awful week.'

"And then he came closer and closer and I started thinking, 'No, that is Raoul Moat.'

"He's walking towards me, on this road, it's only me and him.

"I immediately rang a colleague who was with the police just a little bit further down the hill. I couldn't get through to them.

"Raoul Moat walked straight past them, and disappeared."

Moat went on the run following a shooting spree, and evaded capture for nearly a week.

He took his own life during a stand-off with police, with it being reported that "a shot or shots" had been fired at the scene.

He was taken to Newcastle General Hospital but pronounced dead shortly after his his arrival.
