ITV Love Island contestants' families pull together to issue statement to trolls

The families of this year's Love Island contestants have pulled together to combat online hate from trolls.

Taking to Instagram, the families and friends of the stars wrote a statement. It was shared to the accounts of Gemma Owen, Tasha Ghouri, Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu, Andrew Le Page, Dami Hope and Indiyah Polack during Sunday night's episode of the ITV2 show.

The statement reminded people to "be kind" after several islanders have received harmful comments from viewers watching this year's show.

The statement said: "Love Island is an interactive TV show where opinions, discussions and debate are welcome in equal measure to displays of support, love and kindness. Although we have never met, we stand together today united against the hate messages and insults that some viewers seem to think is acceptable to throw at our friends, sons, daughters and family members.

"Your hate has no place on our pages or in society in general. This post is being shared across contestants' social media pages at the same time and love island fan-related pages as a sign of unity and denouncement of hate." A caption which read "Be kind" was written alongside the statement.

Fans applauded them for coming together and took to the comments of the posts. Em said: "The hate that people get on social media (and reality tv ) is appalling and needs to stop, full stop. I’m sorry you’re all going through this."

Donna said: "Yeah that's awful. People can get so invested that they take stuff personal and react. Never ever ok!" Meanwhile, Nina said: "If you haven’t got something nice to say, don’t say nothing at all."

Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2 and ITV Hub. Episodes are available the following morning on BritBox
