ITV Lorraine viewers baffled as Sadiq Khan discusses menopause on International Women's Day

Lorraine Kelly's ITV show was flooded with complaints after Sadiq Khan appeared to discuss the menopause on International Women's Day.

Viewers were unhappy with the segment as the London Mayor discussed issues facing menopausal women in the workplace and the issue of women's safety in London.

Many fans were up in arms with the segment on Tuesday morning's show as it fell on March 8 - International Women's Day.

Khan was in the studio to promote his new policy for City Hall as women going through the menopause can now take 'menopause leave' and work in temperature controlled environments.

Lorraine asked: "Fantastic idea, now how is it going to work in a practical way?"

The politician responded: "Well what we've got to do as blokes, as managers and others is to talk about this. Get rid of the stigma. The taboo. The embarrassment.

"In City Hall we are leading the way. We've made sure that all our managers and our staff understand that half the population is going to go through this natural biological phenomenon called menopause.

"We've got to make sure that our workplaces are inclusive.

"That means the Women's Network will be having meetings with our staff and drop in sessions," he continued.

"If it's the case that someone is going through the transition, we are going to make sure that women feel confident to ask for support.

"That could be adjusting the temperature in the workplace, having breaks during the course of the day, time off to go and see their doctors.

"What I don't want is talented staff and talented people feeling embarrassed to talk about it."

One viewer tweeted: "International Women's Day and #lorraine gets a man on to talk about menopause"

Another ranted: "I feel someone with more than a basic knowledge should have spoken about menopause in the workplace on #lorraine and left @MayorofLondon #sadiqkhan to focus on reforming the police, tfl, knife crime, increasing energy prices… the list goes on! #doyourjob #ultimatum "

"Why's sadiq khan talking about the menopause"

" #lorraine how about equal pay for paternity for men? My pay is £100 approx a shift and you want to pay me that for a week off work whereas my partner gets 100% pay," another vented.

Another viewer tweeted: Up next @SadiqKhan discusses the menopause…………….. For the sake of good taste I’ll avoid the obvious comparisons lol!! #lorraine "

However, not everyone was annoyed about the appearance.

One said: "Also, women are still a marginalised group. Hence why International Women’s Day is bigger and (rightfully) bigged up. #Lorraine."

Another praised: "Sadiq Khan on TV explaining the importance of men checking their behaviour and emphasising that women and girls shouldn’t need to change theirs. Finally, someone higher up getting it AND explaining it publicly."

A third agreed: "Great to see @SadiqKhan making a real different for staff at city hall- the menopause has a huge impact, including at work & it's crucial that employers (in both the public & private sector) take concrete steps to address it."

Lorraine airs weekdays on ITV at 9am.
