ITV Lorraine's Dr Amir Khan busts common heatwave myths and says you should NOT take cold showers

The Met Office has issued its first ever Red warning for 'exceptional heat' in the UK as temperatures are forecast to soar to as high as 40 degrees. The extreme weather conditions will affect a large part of England on Monday and Tuesday as its expected that the country will have the hottest day we've ever had on record.

With people looking for effective ways to keep cool amid the heatwave, an ITV doctor has now put certain rumours to bed by telling Lorraine viewers what you should and shouldn't do to keep your temperature down in the heat.

Doctor Amir Khan appeared on Lorraine on Monday morning to bust common heatwave myths with some surprising advice that some viewers may not expect.

Dr Amir Khan first addressed that a lot of people put their pyjamas or bedsheets in the freezer in the hope of getting a cooler night's sleep, but the TV doctor said that there is a problem with this, reports Birmingham Live.

"Lots of people will put their pyjamas or their bedsheets in the freezer and then put them on at night to keep them cool," Dr Khan told Lorraine Kelly

"Yes, it will give you that immediate cooling effect, which is good for a lot of people. But the problem is, while you are sleeping with wet pyjamas or a wet sheet, they can heat up and raise your body temperature."

Many people's first thought in the heat is to take a cold shower to cool them down. But surprisingly, the TV doctor said that warm showers are more effective.

"People often take cold showers but longer term warmer showers will help divert blood to your skin and that will help release heat longer term," Dr Khan said.

"It is about finding that balance between immediate cooling and longer-term cooling."

Dr Amir was on Monday's show as Lorraine Kelly returned to present her show for the first time after being struck down with Covid-19.

Lorraine was forced off her self-titled ITV programme for a few days and replaced by Carol Vorderman.

The 62-year-old presenter tweeted early last Monday morning saying the virus had "finally got me" and that she had returned a positive result over the weekend.

"Well the Covid has finally got me and I tested positive at the weekend. Thanks to the vaccine it’s not too bad and I hope to be back at work very soon," Lorraine said.

"Huge thanks to @carolvorders who will be hosting @lorraine until I’m back."
