Lauren Lyle is set to return as Karen Pirie for another season as ITV bosses have recommissioned the show following its successful debut.
The Outlander actress took on the titular role of the fearless Scottish detective in series one, as the show swiftly became one of ITV's most-watched dramas of 2022. The TV show has been adapted by Emer Kenny from Val McDermid’s hugely popular cold case novels with the second series taking inspiration from A Darker Domain, the second in the Karen Pirie novel series.
Lauren, 29, who is best known for her role as Marsali MacKimmie Fraser in the hit Starz franchise, will take on the role of the young and fearless detective once again. This time round, she'll be reopening the investigation into the unsolved kidnapping of a wealthy young heiress and her baby son back in 1985.
Speaking of the good news, the Scots actress said: “I'm thrilled that we will continue the life of our fearless young detective Karen Pirie, and of course, her bumbag. I've known for a while how well the show has gone down behind the scenes so it's been a joy to see audiences want more.
"It's a creative honour to work alongside Emer Kenny with the backbone of Val McDermid's story, season one was incredibly exciting building an original character we hadn't seen before. I look forward to getting the gang back together and finally being able to answer the question: ‘Please say there will be a season two?’ with an ‘Oh yes.’"
Drama Commissioner Huw Kennair Jones said on the news: “We're thrilled the audience loves Karen Pirie as much as we do and can't wait to get going on Val McDermid's fantastic A Darker Domain with World Productions. Returning to the world and characters that Emer so skilfully created and Lauren so brilliantly realised promises to be as exciting and fresh as series 1.”
In other news Outlander will soon return for its seventh and longest instalment, after it was recently announced that the fantasy drama would be ending after season eight to focus on the prequel.
Speaking about the conclusion, Kathryn Busby, President of Original Programming for STARZ, said: "For nearly a decade 'Outlander' has won the hearts of audiences worldwide and we’re pleased to bring Claire and Jamie’s epic love story to a proper conclusion.
"But before we close this chapter there is plenty of their passionate story to tell over the course of 26 new episodes and even more to explore of this dynamic world and its origin story."
