'Gifted' ITV journalist found dead at her flat by her devastated father

ITV journalist Teresa McMahon was just 43 when she was tragically found dead by her father, a pre-inquest hearing was told.

The producer and news editor's body was discovered by her devastated father Bernard and another man on August 23, last year, Manchester Evening News reports.

The hearing was also told about "safeguarding concerns" Teresa's loved ones had for her after she had suffered abuse.

Teresa had been described by her co-worker and presenter Lucy Meacock as "one of the most naturally gifted journalists of her generation".

Senior coroner for Manchester West, Timothy Brennand, was told Granada Reports journalist Teresa, who lived in Salford, had never shown any expression of "self-harm or suicidal intent".

He also heard she was not under the treatment of any mental health services.

Teresa's aunt Lorna attended a hearing in Bolton on Friday alongside her aunt Lorna and uncle Steven, and said she had raised "safeguarding concerns" around her sister.

The hearing was told that reports of concern over abuse had been reported to police before Teresa's death by her friends, colleagues and family members.

Lorna said: "Teresa said she was going to work in London with ITV for three months to get away from this [abuse]."

She complained that police had been yet to interview those concerned, even though "there was evidence she was assaulted on a number of occasions".

She added: "I am hoping the police will look into this further. Friends, colleagues and neighbours had all reported that Teresa was attacked.

"Just because Teresa isn't here today, it doesn't mean it shouldn't be looked into."

As a result of Lorna's appeals, Granada Reports presenter Lucy Meacock, who she said was "fully aware of Teresa's problems", will be called as a witness at a full inquest later this year.

Mr Brennand told Lorna: "If there are criminal proceedings, the coronial investigation will be suspended."

He said that his jurisdiction extended only to how Teresa died, but added: "I also have to look into if the death was preventable."
