ITV issues distress message to Emmerdale viewers after emotional Cathy scenes

ITV issued a distress message to viewers on Wednesday night after scenes which may have 'affected' those watching.

During the episode, viewers saw Cathy battle a medical issue as the character finally revealed what was troubling her; heavy periods and PMS.

Bernice decided to check up on Cathy and spotted her washing her skirt in the sink at home. Cathy was hesitant to open up but after she calmed down she confided in Bernice and told her that she’s suffering from heavy periods.

Bernice offered her support and advice to Cathy but the youngster begged her not to tell anyone, especially Bob about what's going on.

Following the scenes, ITV issued a message to viewers which said: "It's a difficult time for Cathy.

There, ITV linked to a charity called NAPS - the National Association for Premenstrual Syndromes.

The charity said: "If PMS is seriously impacting your life so as to make you feel very unwell, unable to function properly and affecting your relationships, then you need to be able to manage your PMS successfully.

"We cannot offer you a quick fix to your problems, as every woman has to find a treatment appropriate to her individual needs. However, we can give you the reassurance that this organisation, run both by dedicated volunteers, many of whom are or have been severe PMS sufferers themselves and health professionals, also volunteers, with proven expertise in the treatment of PMS, will assist you now and in the future in managing your PMS successfully."

ITV viewers praised Emmerdale for the move.

@countrystrongau said: "God, this took me back to places I didn’t want to remember. On a serious note though, thank you for shining a light on this. So many people still say “its just a period”, not understanding how debilitating heavy periods can be."

@mishybabez said: "Thank you for raising awareness for heavy periods. The actress who plays cathy is amazing. #Emmerdale"

@maryluvzlaughin said: "I don't think there's a girl or woman alive who can't relate to poor Cathy."
