ITV Good Morning Britain viewers slam 'embarrassing' and 'toe curling' interview with Boris Johnson's ex-girlfriend

Good Morning Britain viewers weren't left overly impressed at the show's latest guest. Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley were back at the helm of the ITV news programme on Wednesday (June 8).

As well as discussing the latest news headlines and entertainment news, the pair were joined by Petronella Wyatt, the ex-girlfriend of Boris Johnson. The journalist joined them live in the studio ahead of the Prime Minister first appearance on Parliament after surviving a no confidence vote.

Susanna kickstarted the chat: "This is a kind of chaos that Boris Johnson appears to be operating in now, 148 of his own MPs have zero confidence in him and I wondered if he rather enjoyed that?"

Petronella replied: "No. First of all, he doesn’t enjoy it when people dislike him or don’t have faith in the Johnson product and secondly, he only enjoys chaos of his own making and he can control it, he can’t control this." Richard then asked: "Are you saying he’s thin skinned?"

"Surprisingly thin skinned yes," the PM's former partner replied: "Surprisingly sensitive, easily upset by criticism or the thought that people dislike him." Richard, 66, then pressed: "He’s toughing it out in public but in private would his head be in his hands?"

"I’d imagine so yes,” she answered. “He has a very soft core. I think this would be absolutely hell for him in private. I don’t think he’s sitting down with a stiff drink thinking, ‘everything will be alright I’ll tough it out.’ He’s a bit of an enigma and I think people have the wrong impression of him."

There was also a rather awkward moment when Richard wondered if she'd get back together with Mr Johnson if they were both single. A short time later, Petronella accused the host of being "very presumptuous" before the pair shared a laugh over his line of questioning.

But Good Morning Britain viewers were flocking to social media to have their say. @SurreyLass05 tweeted: "This interview with Doris’ ex girlfriend Petronella Wyatt on #GMB is a lot awkward," to which @sharon23979417 replied: "I’ve turned off lol."

@Colonel_Decker commented: "That interview was absolute cringe & gave zero insight in to anything currently happening." @@lisamj_33 said: "omg that Johnson's ex girlfriend interview was toe curling cringy car crash telly #GMB."

@jjmib shared: "#gmb this is embarrassing why the hell have you got his ex girlfriend on, irrelevant and really embarrassing for you and he." @Colonel_Decker wrote: "This interview is cringe. What is the point in interviewing his ex girlfriend!? @GMB #gmb."

But not everyone agreed as @Elly22990594 said: "I thought it was a great interview. Petronella’s insight was fascinating and she handled the questioning brilliantly!" @tortoiseneck shared: "Fascinating interview with ex girlfriend Petronella Wyatt on #GMB. She knows Boris Johnson better than most people. Did she think when he became PM that he was the right man for the job? No. Does she think the Tories can win the next GE with him in charge? No. Worth a watch!"
