Good Morning Britain viewers were left underwhelmed following a debate which saw Married at First Sight UK Chanita Stephenson appear live on the show. The ITV news programme was back on screens on Thursday morning (November 3) with Kate Garraway and Ben Shephard at the helm.
Chanita, 29, who starred on the most recent series of the E4 marriage experiment show which ended a matter of week ago, appeared live in the studio opposite comedian Freddy Quinne. They were involved in a debate about whether you would judge other people's accents.
It comes after Adele caused a stir by suggesting people have been saying her name wrong throughout her career. The singing sensation revealed has said the correct pronunciation of her name comes with a north London twang. Enfield-born, Tottenham-raised Adele said it should be said as "uh-dell" rather than "ah-dell".
The revelation came about after the 34-year-old Hello and Easy On Me singer praised a London fan who said her name correctly during a recent hour-long Q&A session called "Happy Hour with Adele". But it also comes as a report reveals nearly 1/3 of people have been mocked at work for how they speak.
Freddy shared how he gets 'judged' as a comic when he goes on stage. "It's just one of those things," he said. "You can't stop that from happening, you've got to learn how to deal with it." When asked by Ben if he uses people's accents as part of his stand-up routines, Freddy said "absolutely".
Chanita, meanwhile, said judging people by their accent is like 'unconscious bias' and that we shouldn't 'judge a book by its cover'. The reality star, from Derby, also said that being on national TV saw people comment on her accent. "It made me think more about how I sounded when I speak."
But GMB viewers didn't quite get the point in the chat. @craggsy82 tweeted: "Well, that'll be 10 minutes we'll never get back. #gmb." @uniquedollsUK posted: "There’s a cost of living and energy crisis but let’s all talk about how people with different accents are mocked #gmb."
@MadameMinge argued: "They’re not mispronouncing ‘Adele’, they’re saying it in their regional accents…ffs #gmb." @MichelleBoudin_ shared: "Are people really getting offended over accents. Please take us back to the 90's ... #gmb." @plouise16 added: "They literally all said Adele the same way. Surely every single name in the world sounds different with a different accent? What a non story #GMB."
