ITV Good Morning Britain's Susanna Reid bites back at Ben Shephard over Martin Lewis' 'plus one' dig ahead of NTA's

Susanna Reid was quick to hit back at Ben Shephard's suggestion about her invite to the National Television Awards on Thursday evening. The big showbiz bash will finally take place tonight (October 13) after being postponed from September following the Queen's death.

And the Good Morning Britain presenter will be among the famous TV faces hitting the red carpet and attending the glitzy event at London's OVO Arena Wembley - where it is being held for the first time. But Susanna's attendance comes despite GMB not landing a nomination.

The ITV news programme missed out on making the shortlist in the daytime category, with This Morning, Loose Women, The Chase and The Repair Shop all going head-to-head. Susanna's co-host Kate Garraway is, however, up for a gong and is set to attend the NTAs despite sharing the news that her husband, Derek Draper, is back in hospital following another battle with sepsis.

The 55-year-old TV and radio star is nominated for her second ITV documentary on Derek’s battle after contracting Covid in March 2020, called Caring for Derek. Kate picked up the same award for authored documentary at the 2021 ceremony for her first film, Finding Derek.

On Thursday’s GMB, Ben and Susanna applauded Kate ahead of tonight’s ceremony as they wished her luck. "It’s the biggest night in television, the National Television Awards, and our very own Kate Garraway is nominated," Susanna said, as she and Ben clapped.

"Again, going for two in two, Kate Garraway," Ben said as Kate also appeared in the studio to read the latest news headlines. However, Kate humbly responded: "Well I don’t think we will, but it’d be lovely if it did."

She added: "It's about Caring for Derek and I'd like people to vote for it because it is very much about caring and about the caring system and about the wonders of being a carer. It would be nice as it's the sort of group which often doesn't get recognised, so yes, it would be lovely."

But also during the latest edition of GMB, Susanna took a swipe at Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly when she suggested it's 'someone else's turn' to win Best Presenter after they beat the likes of Holly Willoughby and Piers Morgan to win their 20th Best TV Presenter award at the ceremony.

Kate said: "We all love Ant and Dec, but if it isn't them, I'd love it to be Alison," before Ben agreed: "Wouldn't that be fabulous?" Susanna then chimed in: "It's been them every single year," as Kate replied: "They've had a run..." Susanna then added: "I can imagine that even Ant and Dec might think it's time for someone other than Ant and Dec, and so maybe it is Alison's [turn]."

The Britain's Got Talent and I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here duo, however, won't be around if they do win as they've been forced to pull out of their work commitments after both testing positive for Covid. A representative for the pair said to The Sun : "After both feeling unwell Ant and Dec have tested for Covid and unfortunately have both tested positive. The duo will be postponing work commitments whilst they recover."

Meanwhile, Susanna didn't appear too impressed when Ben suggested she was Martin Lewis' 'plus one' to the event. The Money Saving Expert founder, who has become a regular presenter on GMB, has landed a nod in the new Expert category for his programme, The Martin Lewis Money Show.

As GMB's showbiz reporter Richard Arnold got familiar with Wembley Arena with all the seats set up ready for the stars' arrivals later this evening, he joked that he's usually sat way at the back. Ben speculated that sitting near the front may mean you've won as it'll take less time to get up on stage, leading him to request Richard find Kate's seat. "Promisingly close," Ben said as Susanna commented: "And on the end of an aisle!" before requesting he moves Susanna's seating card to be moved near Kate.

"Have you got one?" Ben cheekily asked. "Aren't you just the plus one for Martin Lews?" he added before Susanna quickly retorted: "No I'm not the plus on for Martin Lewis." But Kate kindly interjected: "You can be my plus one," before Susanna joked: "I'm somewhere at the back if you keep walking!"
