ITV Good Morning Britain's Dr Hilary Jones shares 'worrying' concern amid covid surge

Good Morning Britain's Dr Hilary Jones has shared a "worrying" coronavirus concern.

Wednesday's edition of the ITV news programme was hosted by Richard Madeley and Ranvir Singh. The two were joined by the medical expert, who discussed the sharp rise in covid rates across the UK.

The latest data from Public Health England showed the rate of positive tests had risen by almost two thirds in the Liverpool City Region. Figures showed there were 1,737 cases in the week ending June 13, which is 677 more than the previous week.

The increase is in line with surging rates across the country as figures estimate around 1.13m people in the UK have coronavirus. Dr Hilary confirmed the current strain is the milder Omicron variant, but admitted he was concerned about the number of vulnerable people who had received their second booster jab.

He added: "Unfortunately, it is showing an uptake again. One in 50 people as opposed to one in 70 just two weeks ago have covid now.

"What's worrying the health security agency is that a fifth of people aged 75 and over have not had their second booster, which is their fourth jab. They're the ones getting increasingly hospitalised now so they should really accept their jab.

"They'll have had their invitation and if they have let it pass then they should contact their GP and arrange it." Dr Hilary confirmed the main symptoms of the dominant variant are breathing difficulties, fever and severe fatigue.

He added: "It's still around and we haven't got through the pandemic yet. Some precaution is still wise." Ranvir quizzed the doctor on how the majority of people were told to start treating coronavirus "like we would the flu".

He responded: "That's reasonable for people under 60 and this will become endemic. There are still clinically vulnerable groups and the elderly where its still a bit of a risk and they need to be careful."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV and the ITV Hub
