ITV GMB's Ben Shephard steps in as Nadine Dorries snaps at Ranvir Singh

Ben Shephard was forced to step in as Nadine Dorries criticised Ranvir Singh's line of questioning.

Earlier this week, the Culture Secretary mocked Rishi Sunak over his expensive taste in clothing. Ms Dorries, a supporter of Mr Sunak's leadership rival Liz Truss, pointed to reports that the millionaire former chancellor has been pictured wearing a £3,500 suit and £490 Prada shoes.

She said Foreign Secretary Ms Truss is more likely to be seen in a pair of £4.50 earrings from high street chain Claire's. Her comments provoked a backlash from parliamentary colleagues, but she has defended them.

Asked by Ranvir on Good Morning Britain about her remarks and whether she had been spoken to. Ranvir said: "Just to clear up reports that senior figures within Liz Truss' team have spoken to Ms Dorries asking her to tone down public remarks.

"A source said Nadine has been spoken to by someone she would listen to. Have you been spoken to?"

Ms Dorries said the reports were "totally fabricated". Attempting to steer the conversation to a different topic, Ranvir said: "Let's talk about the leadership contest between the two. You seem to..."

However, Ranvir was unable to finish her sentence as Ms Dorries interrupted. She said: "Shall we talk about the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham which is why I am here and the amazing buzz that's in this city?

"And shall we focus on the Lionesses and the positives about what's happening over the next five days in the UK."

Ben then stepped in and said: "Nadine Dorries, we've been on air since 6am this morning and we've been talking about Birmingham every hour we are celebrating it and we are celebrating the Lionesses as well.

"But of course we only get you for about 15 minutes so I hope you appreciate that we want to talk about the Commonwealth Games and we are thrilled they are going to be in Birmingham, it's going to be a great success.

"But we also need to ask you about some of the other pressing issues that the political landscape is facing, you do appreciate that?"
