ITV Emmerdale's tribute to Philip Wood as soap remembers beloved director

Emmerdale paid tribute to much loved director Phillip Wood at the end of last night's episode of the ITV soap on Thursday, July 8.

A title card paying a tribute to the soap director popped up on the screen as the credits rolled at the end of the programme in the most recent episode, the message read: "Dedicated to Philip Wood".

It came at the end of a particularly emotional episode which saw Cain and Chas open up about their childhood in a heart-to-heart about their mother as they struggled to come to terms with her decision to stop her cancer treatment.

Phillip worked behind the scenes on the long-running soap between 1999 to 2005 and directed a total of 66 episodes, however, he wasn't working on Emmerdale at the time of his death.

The talented director was well known in the industry and had also directed several episodes of Coronation Street throughout his career. Phillip worked on the rival from 2000, directing 22 episodes in total. Other works saw him direct Channel 4's Brookside, Desperate Scouse Wives and River City.

The exact cause of Phillip's death is unknown, however, it is clear from the tributes that came flooding in back in April when the incident occurred, that he was a much loved and valued member of the team.

At the time Liam O'Brien, who played Ethan Blake in Emmerdale, paid a moving tribute to his co-star describing him as a "wonderful director".

He penned on Twitter: "Very sad to hear of the passing of Philip Wood a friend of mine from the @emmerdale days, a great character and wonderful director. First worked with him on a Brookside workshop in Belfast as a teen only to be directed by him in the farm nearly a decade later. RIP pal."
