ITV Dancing On Ice Bez's Liverpool roots, prison sentence and political career

Bez has endured a turbulent start to life on Dancing On Ice.

The 57-year-old's real name is Mark Berry - and he is one of the celebrities donning their skates in a bid to impress the Ice Panel on this season of the popular ITV programme.

The Happy Mondays musician wore a helmet for his first performance last week and has suffered a number of horror falls during training.

However, this is not detracting from his journey as he admitted he is loving his time on the show alongside professional Angela Egan.

He said: "I've actually loved the training. I wake up every day looking forward to getting out there on the ice. I've got a great dancing partner and honestly, it's been so much fun to do."

The musician was gutted after he tested positive after his debut performance which has meant he has had to take a break from training to isolate.

He told the Daily Star : "I've had a positive test. I'm gutted because I'm going to be missing training but I'm looking forward to skating on the show again for Week Three and I'll be tuning in at home and cheering on my mates who are skating this weekend."

Bez's rollercoaster time on Dancing On Ice is a suitable reflection of his rock and roll time as part of the Happy Mondays.

Bez played the maracas in the Manchester band who were infamously known as 24 hour party people due to their hedonistic lifestyle.

According to The Mirror, Bez admitted he took "every drug going" at the height of their fame - and the hardcore sessions tended to "run on a bit".

He said: "But after three nights and into the fourth day, I think you can become a bit dysfunctional and, if you’ve got a good mate, they’ll usually send you off home to bed."

The drug-fuelled lifestyle eventually led to the Happy Monday's disbanding for the first time in 1992 after the turbulent recording of 1992 album Yes Please.

The group have since reformed three times and are still active after getting back together for the fourth time in 2012.

Although the Happy Mondays are renowned as key members of the Madchester scene of the 80s and 90s, Bez's roots are actually from Liverpool.

His parents hailed from Norris Green and were friends with Echo and the Bunnymen.

Bandmate Shaun Ryder even explained how the Happy Mondays name derived from lyrics in the legendary Liverpool group's hit 1983 single The Cutter.

Bez remains good friends with Shaun and the two formed Black Grape while the Happy Mondays had disbanded.

However, Bez eventually started to suffer financial troubles and declared himself bankrupt in 2005.

He participated in Celebrity Big Brother to pay off his debts and was relieved to be crowned the winner.

He told Davina McCall: "Now I can just pay my bills and walk straight with no stress.

"I was in a great deal of trouble. Now I'm bailed out and I'm forever grateful."

Bez eventually admitted the Big Brother win did him "no good financially" as he was declared bankrupt again just three years later.

He told Martin Lewis in 2013: "I managed to pay off a tax bill I had.

"My problem is doing the paper work and such like. I just don't do it. I could actually pay somebody to do it. I could but I don't."

Bez's personal troubles continued in 2010 when he was jailed for four weeks for assaulting his ex-girlfriend.

According to the Mirror, he was originally handed a community order and asked to pay £450 in costs.

But he told the court he would not obey the sentence, and protested his innocence. He eventually served two weeks of the sentence at Strangeways Prison before being released.

Bez was searching for an alternative way of life after his prison sentence and hit the headlines again in 2014 when he announced he was launching his own political party.

The Reality Party stood with three candidates in the 2015 General Election and aimed "to bring about revolutionary change for everyone in as short a time as possible.”

However, Bez's ambitions to become a Salford MP were dealt a blow when the Electoral Commission ordered him to change the name as it was too similar to the already established Realists' party, which could cause confusion with voters.

He later changed the name to the We are the Reality Party, and gained 703 votes in Salford and Eccles.

Bez now leads a calmer life and launched his own fitness channel during the pandemic.

He is engaged to singer Firouzeh Razavi and is looking forward to married life after his stint on Dancing On Ice.

Bez told the Mirror : "She takes great care of me. She’s really loving – everything a man would want.”

Dancing On Ice airs on ITV and ITV Hub in January 2022.
