ITV Corrie viewers complain soap has 'spoiled' result as it announces BAFTA win before it was screened

The Coronation Street cast and crew travelled from Weatherfield to the capital city to pick up the award for Best Soap and Continuing Drama at the BAFTA TV Awards held at London's Royal Festival Hall. Hosted by comedian Richard Ayoade the pre-recorded awards were screened on Sunday evening (May 8) after getting underway earlier that day.

Coronation Street triumphed over Casualty, Emmerdale and Holby City. The long-running soap which launched in 1960 declared the joyous news to fans on Instagram. "We've won a BAFTA," the show's official Instagram announced with a video of Team Corrie, including Sally Dynevor and Charlie de Melo who play Sally Metcalfe and Imran Habeeb, raising a toast with the famous BAFTA mask award.

But as the congratulations poured in many followers grumbled that the announcement had spoiled the result for them while the awards were still being screened on the BBC. spoilerdale.x complained with a crying emoji: "It’s not been on TV yet your(sic) early."

bretthadley42 asked: "Spoilers much? But well done!" clivejohnson1999 said: "Shame posted before screened on TV though." And lesleysaintjohn exclaimed: "Spoiler! Well done."

It was pointed out that the award winners had already been announced on the BAFTA website. hornseabear said: "If you actually go look on https://www.bafta.org/ the winners have been posted ages before they posted this video."

But spoilerdale.x replied: "Yes but I would of hoped that they wouldn’t have posted it on their socials when people are trying to enjoy the show." And rebeccasarker.fanpagex said: "They should have waited until we’ve watched it!!"

Corrie's win was the last award to be announced when the ceremony was screened on BBC One. "Yay!!!" cheered Maria Windass actress Samia Longchambon on Instagram. Daniel Brocklebank who plays Billy Mayhew applauded: "Fantastic!!!" And Elle Mulvaney who plays Amy Barlow responded with applause emojis.

jack.ives03 congratulated: "Very well deserved!! Absolutely love Corrie." And joannagoodyear1983said: "A massive well done to you Coronation Street, Absolutely well deserved."

Ahead of the awards the show posted a snap of Sally and Charlie smiling together looking very smart. Charlie, who has played solicitor Imran for almost five years, wore a dapper cream jacket and black bow tie. And Sally, who has played Sally since 1986, dazzled in an elegant black dress with glam smokey eye makeup.

Actor Charlie is currently at the centre of the drama as his smarmy character fights devastated mum Abi Webster for custody of their baby boy Alfie who was born after they had a one-night-stand. Imran recently played dirty in court to bring Alfie home but Abi is determined to win him back.

And soap watchers are so gripped by the plot they couldn't resist having a dig at Charlie's character. Bubbles.1969 demanded with an angry face: "Give that baby back." And daniellelilly6 said: "I’m sorry but it’s a no to Imran!"
