ITV Corrie fans disagree as BBC Strictly star Will Mellor returns to the soap as villain Harvey Gaskell

Coronation Street saw the return of Strictly Come Dancing star Will Mellor as soap villain Harvey Gaskell in chilling scenes. In Monday night's episode (October 17) Leanne Battersby visited drugs lord Harvey in prison after she and partner Nick Tilsley received visiting orders.

A year ago Harvey shot and killed Natasha Blakeman, the mother of Nick's 11-year-old son Sam, believing her to be Leanne. In a case of mistaken identity, after escaping from a prison van to seek revenge, Harvey gunned down Natasha in Leanne and Nick's flat.

Harvey terrorised Leanne after she helped police to expose his gang in order to protect her son Simon Barlow who was working for him. As Nick and Sam prepared to mark the anniversary of Natasha’s death, Leanne said she was going to the cash and carry.

Secretly she headed off to visit Harvey in prison. Leanne was then shocked when Harvey told her that Sam has been writing to him and he wants Leanne and Nick to stop him.

The pair confronted Sam who got upset and said he just wants to know why Harvey killed his mum. When Sam said he’ll stop writing to Harvey if he can visit him instead, Nick and Leanne were horrified and put their foot down.

Corrie fans disagreed as they flocked to Twitter, with some thinking Sam had every right to see Harvey and others saying it was a terrible idea. @itzzzo_defended: "Sam asking why is Leanne allowed to go and he’s not… maybe cause Sam’s 11 and wants to face the man who killed his mom?"

@CxxPIPxx tweeted: "It's making me cringe how tone deaf Nick and Leanne are regarding Sam and the potential damage that could cause him." And @KingOfSunshine said: "I LOVE Sam. Breaks my heart every time."

But Wee_Westie29 said: "Yeah, that's a bad idea, cause Harvey could tell Sam that Leanne was his intended target and not Natasha and the results of that confession could be horrendous." And @CallumKeith1999 said: "#Corrie This is only going to mess Sam up even more. He's gotta reel it in."

Fans are divided over what Sam should do (ITV)

@ChurchieBoy1986 echoed: "Sam Prison isn't for you." @page_lace30 said: "Sam thinks he’s a big man."@BluerayBird demanded: "They need to be parents and get him therapy - no writing, no visits. The End!" And @Clawmaw wrote: "I wonder if Sam can cope with Harvey's blunt attitude if he goes to visit him! It might tip the poor kid over the edge."

Fans said seeing Bredbury actor Will back on Coronation Street took some getting used to after he's been dazzling fans with his moves on the BBC dance contest Strictly. At the weekend he performed the rumba to Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift's The Joker And The Queen with dance partner Nancy Xu but scored his lowest points of the series so far after being stricken with the flu.

@priya_kaur_uk wrote: "Love Will Mellor but never got used to seeing him in this bad guy role." @mishybabez_ said: "I have missed Harvey Will Mellor is still gorgeous." And @DunlopTracey said: "Me loving Will Mellor on #Strictly then remembering he's evil Harvey in #Corrie."
