Coronation Street fans and characters have been left reeling after Monday's (April 11) episode. The long-running show aired a sudden death and character Roy Cropper, for one, was devastated.
As the show aired at the beginning of the week, the ITV soap delivered a bombshell storyline and Roy Cropper, played by actor David Neilson, just couldn't comprehend the news. As he discovered a close friend had passed away, just hours after he spoke to them, Roy was visibly devastated by the sudden loss.
Newcomer to Weatherfield, Melvyn, died after a medical emergency, leaving his beloved pooch Freddie in the care of Roy for the time being. Melvyn had visited Roy in the café and they planned to go on a day trip together, along with Freddie the dog.

But not long after the pair set off to visit a local bat roost, Roy returned with some worrying news. Roy confirmed their day trip had come to an abrupt end, and that Melvyn had to be rushed to hospital. According to the Mirror, Roy, cradling Freddie, told Shona and Nina that Melvyn had suffered a 'funny turn' and that doctors were running tests.
Roy said it wasn't looking too good for his friend, but his family was with him - while he later informed Evelyn about the incident, too. He confirmed Melvyn had collapsed and appeared to suffer from a heart attack, and that doctors were concerned about him.
Then tragedy struck, as Roy had some "distressing news" via a phone call with Melvyn's sister. She informed Roy that Melvyn had died a short time ago, leaving him in complete shock and unable to process the sudden loss of his friend. He told Nina: "It's very hard to comprehend. I was only talking to him a matter of hours ago. He seemed fine as far as one can tell of such things."
Roy then told her that he needed to alert their group about the sad loss, while little Freddie appeared to cry at the news. Later this week Roy will find out he has inherited the adorable dog, leaving Roy with an impossible decision to make.
Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
