ITV Coronation Street slapped with official complaints after fans spot blunder amid 'boycott' claims

Coronation Street has been slapped with official complaints over the climax of one of its storylines just as another comes under fire. Last week viewers of the ITV soap were horrified when Alya Nazir was stabbed in shocking scenes.

Teenager Blake was planning to attack Maria Connor as the councillor was holding a refugee drop in which was being held in Alya's restaurant, Speed Daal, which she runs with her gran, Yasmeen. It came after both Maria and Alya became the target of an extremist group led by eco-warrior Griff Reynolds and his racist gang who groomed troubled teen Max Turner.

And upon seeing the videos Max helped create for the terrifying gang, Blake decided to pull his own horrifying stunt, later saying as he was led away by the police that it was Max who inspired him.

After Councillor Connor gave her speech at the event organised to highlight the Weatherfield refugee drop-in centre which she has been campaigning for, Blake vowed to make her pay for helping others, meanwhile, Max was tuning in to Blake's racist rant online and raced to the scene when he saw the fellow teen revealed a knife in the video.

As Max arrived and was refused entry, Blake suddenly ran towards Maria brandishing the knife. In an heroic act, Alya spotted what was happening and jumped in front of Blake leaving her impaled by his knife. As she fell to the floor the horrified guests realised what was happening and ran out onto the street as Gary and Daryan battled with Blake who was still brandishing the knife.

Alya has since been seen back home after suffering a collapsed lung but despite trying to get out and about, it is clear that the business owner is scared by what happened to her.

It has now been confirmed that furious viewers contacted Ofcom to complain about the violence in the episode that aired pre-watershed last Wednesday evening (January 25), with 72 official complaints being made in total.

The confirmation of the complaints comes just days after fans threatened to 'boycott' the soap if a new storyline takes a turn. Earlier this week Hope Stape once again sparked the wrath of Coronation Street fans as she set her sights on a new target - Peanut the dog. The 12-year-old confided in her friend Sam how she intended to have her revenge for her pet Cilla the chinchilla's murder, with the finger pointed at Peanut, the pet dachshund of Beth and Kirk Sutherland.

On Hope’s instructions, Sam reluctantly conned Maria into handing over Vin-Diesel the stuffed weasel from the barber shop. After ordering Sam to go, Hope carefully placed Vin Diesel’s mouth around the skin of her arm before heading home and crying to her parents that an incensed Peanut had bitten her.

And viewers flocked to Twitter to warn they would be switching off if anything happened to Peanut. @fussyMcWhiskers said: "Corrie If I am subjected to Peanut cruelty on top of everything else, it's over!" @suzysasha exclaimed: "#corrie @itvcorrie If the writers let anything happen to little Peanut we riot!!" And @__Melissaaaa said: "Honestly will refuse to watch #Corrie if they continue this storyline with what Hope is doing to poor little Peanut!"

But other fans were quick to point out a blunder with the scenes, which saw a concerned Fiz and Tyrone taking their daughter off to the hospital to get her bite wound checked. @Lfcbynature1988 tweeted: "So we're supposed to believe that the hospital cleared up Hope's cut without recognising it wasn't an actual bite mark. Writers really insulting our intelligence here #Corrie."

@itzzzo_ asked: "But why didn't Beth, Fiz, Tyrone, Evelyn and more importantly the hospital not recognise that Hope's bite marks weren't ones of a dog? #Corrie." @GeorgiaBowring posted: "#Corrie A doctor would be able to see clearly that the bite on Hopes arm isn’t from a dog!" @LillyBelle19 added: "Surely a doctor cud tell that wee Peanut dinny bite that wee looper Hope? Come on ffs #Corrie."
