ITV Coronation Street's Stephen Reid star's accent truth and show exit admission

Coronation Street's Stephen Reid is currently wreaking havoc on the Cobbles.

The killer, played by Todd Boyce, arrived in Weatherfield last year to escape his money woes. However, he has since become embroiled in a desperate spiral that culminated in the murder of Leo Thompkins.

Stephen has since tried to keep his dark secret under wraps while also trying to resolve his financial situation. However, the plot is set to take another sinister turn as spoilers this week unveiled Stephen will soon claim another life.

The actor told the ECHO and other press last month how he will set his sights on Teddy Thompkins when Leo's dad gets closer to the truth. He said: "Now that he's got one body down, he's perfectly willing to cover that up with another murder."

The 61-year-old revealed how his character's presence on the show makes his fellow co-stars nervous. He said: "I think I’ve had a scene with probably every main character on the street, which makes them all terrified, I’m sure. They know to stay away from me.

"If I get asked one more time, repeatedly, by the same people, 'so how long are you gonna be in the show?' I’ve had people ask me three or four times, the same person, because they want to know how long they’ve got to be worried for. They’re just sweating it, they just really are."

Todd provided an insight into conversations he has had with show producer, Iain MacLeod, on when he might exit the show. It looks like his co-stars will have to remain worried for a lot longer as the actor told the ECHO and other press last December: "Iain [Macleod] was talking about maybe the end of next year."

Away from the Cobbles, Todd was born in the USA and grew up in Australia. His onscreen counterpart was raised in Canada and the actor does not alter his North American accent to play the role.

Corrie fans suspected Stephen was set for a sinister plot when he first appeared on the show. Show producer, Iain MacLeod, said he wondered if the unfamiliarity of hearing his accent on the soap added to his mystery before the real twist was revealed.

He told the ECHO and other press: "I love that story and I love that character. I don't know what this says about me and the wider viewing public but when he first came in, I know everyone thought, 'ooh his accent is a bit of a thing isn't it? I don't know what I make of this accent in this show.

"And then the moment he revealed himself to be evil, everyone went 'I get it now'. I knew there was something I didn't like about him and it's not the accent, it's that he's a wrong'un. Todd has brought such a clever performance and such rawness."

Todd has enjoyed an impressive career in film and TV as he spoke of how honoured he is to play a Corrie villain. He said: "I love the show, I've watched it for years, ever since I was a kid in Australia and you hope to play Hamlet in your 20s and 30s, you hope to play Macbeth in your 50s, you hope to play this and it's even rarer than that. It's such an honour and I get emotional about it."
