Coronation Street star Jude Riordan has pointed out that Stranger Things weren't the first to use Kate Bush in a moment of need. The Sam Blakeman actor took to social media to remind fans that he was involved in a scene on the ITV soap that included one of the icon singer's songs.
Last week Kate Bush broke a trio of chart records as one of her most memorable songs claimed the top spot. One of those broken was the record for the longest time taken for a single to reach number one after Running Up That Hill raced up the charts 37 years after it was released.
Originally released in 1985 as the lead track on her Hounds Of Love album, the new-wave track has had a global resurgence in popularity after it was featured in the fourth series of Stranger Things. It originally reached number three in the UK on its release and it charted again in 12th place in 2012.
The British singer-songwriter has also secured the title of the longest gap between number one singles, as her only other chart-topping moment was 44 years ago with her debut single, Wuthering Heights, in 1978. And to round off her trio of records, at 63 Bush has become the oldest female artist ever to score a UK number one. She replaces Cher, who was 52 when her song Believe topped the charts in 1998.
Running Up That Hill has skyrocketed up the charts after it featured in episodes one and four of the newly-released fourth season of Netflix’s Stranger Things. In the show, Max Mayfield, played by Sadie Sink, is heard listening to the song on her Walkman.
Kate has said she has been “overwhelmed by the scale of affection and support” for the song when she thanked fans for sending the track to number one. She also praised the creators of the popular horror drama for “bringing the song into so many people’s lives”.
But Jude rightly pointed out that Corrie did beat the Netflix hit to getting once of her songs into an episode - at least recently, anyway. Taking to his Instagram Story with a photo of him in character, he said: "Corrie did Kata Bush first @strangerthingstv." The 11-year-old then added: "IYKYK [If you know you know]. Corrie super fans will know."
The young actor was referring to a scene aired on the ITV soap last year where his character was kidnapped. The residents of Weatherfield were left reeling back in May 2021 when adorable Sam was snatched from the cobbles. Unbeknownst to them, he had been tricked into the back of a white van and kidnapped by a henchman of drugs lord Harvey Gaskell during his time on the street in a sick plot engineered by his dastardly aunt Sharon.
In sad scenes, poor Sam was trapped inside the back of the white van with only his little torch to give him light. He was seen singing to himself to stay calm after he was tricked into the van by the lure of a nice big telescope. He shakily sang lyrics from Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush classic Don't Give Up, singing: "Don't give up, 'Cause you have friends; Don't give up, You're not beaten yet."
