ITV Coronation Street's Sally Lindsay's childhood number one to TV star

Sally Lindsay will be showcasing yet another of her talent's on tonight's The Chase.

The actress will be joining host Bradley Walsh and fellow celebrity contestants Lance Ellington, Beth Tweddle and Bob Champion as they pit their wits against one of the ruthless Chasers in the hope of winning a potential prize pot worth thousands of pounds. They must work as a team and play strategically to answer general knowledge questions against the clock and race down the game board to the exit without being caught on the ITV quiz show.

The former Coronation Street actress has showcased her many talents in different ways in the past and it isn't the first time she's been on a quiz show. She was once one of six guest hosts replacing Richard Osman on BBC's Pointless.

At the time, she said: "As everyone knows I LOVE a game show and being asked to sit in Richard Osman’s hallowed chair is beyond thrilling! Can’t wait to be Pointless."

The 49-year-old has become a prominent figure on many British TV staples, including Coronation Street, Loose Women and Still Open All Hours, now adding Pointless to her growing list of credits, reported Birmingham Live.

Born in Stockport in Greater Manchester, Sally first appeared on television aged seven on Top of the Pops when her school choir, the St Winifred's School Choir, reached number one in the UK charts with There's No One Quite Like Grandma in 1980. After leaving school, she studied English at the University of Hull and hoped to become a journalist.

Her career path changed after being cast in a play and enjoying the experience, going on to study at North Cheshire Theatre School. She soon tried her hand at stand-up comedy, going on to become friends with Peter Kay and starring alongside him in Phoenix Nights and in the video for the Comic Relief single Is This the Way to Amarillo?

Lindsay also played Twiggy’s girlfriend Michelle in an episode of The Royle Family in 2000. Perhaps her most well known role in two decades of acting was presented to her when she was cast as Shelley Unwin in Coronation Street in 2001.

She went on to feature in over 750 episodes of the ITV soap, during which she won the Best Actress category in the 2005 Inside Soap Awards, before leaving the role in 2006. She has since narrated numerous shows for the programme and was spotted on the set in 2019 to film a documentary for the show to celebrate its 60th anniversary.

Sally’s post-Corrie career included a voice role in the BBC Wallace and Gromit film A Matter of Loaf and Death, which aired on Christmas Day in 2008, as well as joining the cast of BBC Three sketch show Scallywagga in 2010. ITV’s detective series Scott & Bailey began airing in 2011 after being developed from an idea conceived by Lindsay and fellow Corrie actress Suranne Jones, with the former playing Alison Bailey.

From 2011 to 2018, Sally featured in Sky’s comedy series Mount Pleasant, while from 2013 to 2019 she played Kath Agnew in BBC’s Still Open All Hours. She later appeared alongside Nigel Havers in Sally and Nigel’s Posh Hotel, with further credits coming in Citizen Kane, Ordinary Lies, Moving On and Cold Call.

In autumn 2021, her Saturday night drama series The Madame Blanc Mysteries became one of the most popular new shows on Channel 5, with episodes drawing in around 2.5 million viewers. Her time as a permanent panellist on Loose Women began in September 2011 before leaving in March 2014.

She has also dabbled in the theatre, making her first outing as Marilyn Monroe in Ella before future appearances in Much Ado About Nothing, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella. In her personal life, Sally married Steve White, the former drummer of Paul Weller's band The Style Council, in 2013, with the pair sharing twin boys Louie and Victor.

Her first taste of quiz show presenting came in April 2021 when she became the interim host of ITV’s Tenable, replacing Warwick Davis whose scheduling conflicts made him unable to film. Sally was eventually announced as one of six special guest hosts to take on Osman’s Pointless mantle last year.
