Coronation Street actress Millie Gibson has shared the reason why she decided to quit after three years in the ITV soap.
Millie, 18, is known for playing Kelly Neelan in the series, a role she has held since 2019. It was recently announced she is set to depart from the show, with reports suggesting her character may be killed off in an epic stunt using Hollywood style special effects.
Speaking to the Daily Star about her departure, Millie said: “My last scene with Mikey [North], I couldn’t stop crying. I’ve never cried on a film set before, but even running the lines I was choking up.

“It was such a hard scene, but I’m so excited to see it because it’s a really good scene, it wraps it all up – but it’s very sad.”
The actress revealed her reason for leaving the cobbles is because she is “still young” and has “no responsibilities,” so feels free to take more risks in an effort to further her career. She said: “ Corrie is just a home.
“That’s the best way I can describe it, it’s a home. And because I’m so young, I just thought I need to leave home for a bit and spread my wings and see what could happen.
“I have no responsibilities, I don’t have kids or a mortgage to pay or anything like that yet, I’m still grateful to be living at home. So I’m going to see what else the world has, and if it [works out], it does.
“I just thought I may as well see what happens while I’m still young. But I’m going to miss Corrie so much.”
The soap star also admitted her parents were not initially supportive of her decision to give up the security of her current role. She said: “When I first thought, ‘This is going to be the year I [leave]’, my mum and dad were like, ‘Are you sure? It’s such a secure place and you’re doing great, you’ve having great storylines.’
“I said, ‘I know, but I’ve got to trust my gut and my instincts.’ I went with it without them even being on board at first, but as soon as I began to convince them they were like, ‘Fine we’ll accept it.’
Despite her parents’ reaction, Millie said she felt she had to just “go with it and hope for the best.” Earlier this week, Millie showed off a lavish leaving gift from her co-star Tanisha Gorey, who plays Asha Alahan in the soap.
In snaps posted to Instagram, the actress described a piece of jewellery bearing her character’s initials as “the most perfect present.” Coronation Street airs on ITV on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm.
