There were gasps among Coronation Street fans as Jacob Hay's real links to Harvey Gaskell were revealed. Viewers knew that the character, played by Jack James Ryan, had some association with the out-and-out baddie, played by Will Mellor, as he worked as part of his drugs gang.
However, the sudden arrival of Jacob's father, Damon, in Weatherfield has revealed that Jacob was more than just working for Harvey - he's his nephew. The big reveal was made during Monday night's hour-long edition of the ITV soap.
Damon, played by Ciarán Griffiths, showed up on the street to meet with his son, saying he wanted to make things right. However, having started a new life away from his former crimes, Jacob rejected him.
After speaking to his girlfriend Amy Barlow about his dad and how the last time he saw him was when he was 16, Amy encouraged him to reconnect with Damon and share with him how he really feels about their relationship before it's too late. Jacob then reluctantly met Damon and told his dad he didn’t "want anything" from him.
As Damon wondered if Harvey had been looking after him, Jacob told him the truth and that the opposite in fact happened. Damon was horrifed and started to say: "If my brother tried to hurt you," before Jacob cut him off. "If they knew who I was. If they knew Harvey was my uncle, it’d all be over," Jacob said, seemingly referring to Amy and his new neighbours.
It was also revealed in the episode that Damon had given his sibling a load of money a while back - only for Harvey to give this to Nick Tilsley following his son Sam's visit to the prison to get answers over his mum, Natasha's, horror death. Nick ended up using the cash on The Bistro but Damon wasn't happy and confronted Nick, making it clear that while he would leave him alone for the time being, he may return.
Following the big reveal, Jack took to Instagram to praise his new co-star Ciarán and tease that there's more to come from the pair. Resharing a post from Corrie's official Instagram page, the soap star wrote: "Thank you for all the lovely messages about tonight's @coronationstreet, genuinely means a lot.
"I've really put my all into this storyline so I'm glad people are still enjoying it! Stay tuned, trouble's coming." He also posted on Twitter: "Told you guys Ciaran was unreal. I’ve put my absolute all into this storyline so I really hope you enjoy it. Strap yourselves in, it’s going to be an absolute rollercoaster #Corrie."
