ITV Coronation Street's Debbie star Sue Devaney looks completely different on This Morning

Coronation Street star Sue Devaney surprised viewers as she appeared on This Morning. The actress, who is playing Debbie Webster in the ITV soap, appeared on the ITV daytime show to talk about her latest storyline after her character tried to conduct an insurance scam.

As Corrie fans know, Debbie suggested pulling off a robbery at the Bistro as a quick way of getting the cash she was desperately in need of following Ed Bailey's accident at her hotel and the lack of business at the restaurant on the famous street. However, the owner got cold feet but Ryan, who she confided in, decided to go ahead with the plan.

With Casino Night underway, in scenes aired during the ITV soap last week, Ryan told Debbie that he was going to fuse the electrics and grab the cash from the safe. Suddenly the bistro was plunged into darkness and Debbie reluctantly helped with Ryan’s plan. But things quickly unravelled when Leanne Battersby found the money gone.

Fast-forward and Ryan was left reporting his own crime to the police before getting caught red-handed on CCTV. While he faces the prospect of prison, Debbie was running around trying to hide her involvement in the crime while also paying off Ed Bailey with the money Ryan nicked from the Bistro.

During Friday's episode, Nick Tilsley Ryan that he must return all of the cash and if not, he’ll make sure he's charged for more than just stealing. Debbie then put a plan into action to try and save Ryan but so far, she hasn't managed to change Leanne and Nick's minds on giving Ryan the benefit of the doubt.

Appearing on This Morning, Sue, who first played Debbie from 1984 to 1985 before returning to the cobbles in 2019, jokingly defended her character's actions. She told Josie Gibson and Craig Doyle: "I just say that whatever storyline they give Debbie, if she’s a bit out there, I put it all down to menopause!"

She laughed and added: "I promised I won’t mention the menopause, but I’ve got to because I understand it." But she also said of Debbie: "It’s like anybody. They’re not awful through and through… She’s got that side to her but she’s a businesswoman and she is quite hard…

"Portraying that is brilliant, but underneath there is a softness there. She’s had it tough, never been married, never had any children. She’s had to be a tough cookie all her life, she’s had to survive."

The 55-year-old soap star said she loves playing Debbie even if she can be ‘very naughty'. Sue said: "It’s really good fun, and it’s nice that I was in it when I was 16, and now I’m in my 50s and I’m back in it... "They didn’t recast, they didn’t use somebody else which they could have done. They could’ve gone for a taller, more glamorous younger actress."
