Coronation Street has revealed that Jacob Hay's dad will be making his way to the cobbles. The character was first seen on screen, played by Jack James Ryan, back in 2020 before returning to the ITV soap last year.
During his first stay in Weatherfield, Jacob tormented Leanne Battersby following the heartbreaking death of her son, Oliver, while recruiting her son Simon Barlow into selling drugs. He later disappeared after getting on the wrong side of drug boss Harvey Gaskell. And the character, played by Will Mellor, later caused chaos on the street, resulting in the death of Natasha Blakeman.
But since his return, Corrie viewers have warmed to Jacob as he struck up a relationship with Amy Barlow and tried to turn his life around by getting a job at the Underworld factory. He is now living with Amy and their two pals Summer Spellman and Aaron Sandford in the flat formerly occupied by Toyah and her late husband Imran Habeeb.
But trouble seems to follow Jacob around and despite putting his drug dealing past behind him, it’s about to come knocking once more in the shape of dad Damon. Viewers don't know too much about Jacob's past, having,as mentioned, cleaned up his act since escaping evil Harvey’s clutches,
Believing life to be on the up, Jacob is horrified when Damon comes looking for his son and is desperate to get rid of his dad. But why is Jacob so intent on having nothing to do with Damon? What exactly is Damon’s background and why has he suddenly appeared in Weatherfield?
Damon’s quick to make out he’s here to put things right with Jacob and make up for lost time but Corrie fans will be left wondering ig there more to it than that as Damon starts pushing for a business opportunity at the Bistro. Should Nick and Leanne also be watching their backs once more?
Ciaran Griffiths will make his on screen debut as Damon in December - and viewers are sure to recognise him having previously worked on dramas such as The Bay, Shameless and Waterloo Road.
The Manchester actor is probably best known Gary Best in The Bill and Micky Maguire in Shameless. But his first TV role came while attending St Mary's RC High School in Astley near Leigh, between 1994 and 1999 as it was during this time that he starred in ITV's Children's Ward, aged 13.
Corrie also won't be Ciaran's first soap role as on New Year's Day 2018 he made a guest appearance in the BBC One's EastEnders, playing Milo. But his last TV role came in 2020 when the 39-year-old starred in an episode of Casualty, as Peter Hawker, a man who'd suffered a brain injury.
On being cast in the role of Damon, Ciaran said: "I’m happy to be back in Manchester to see my family and friends after being away in Australia for the last 3 years. The city has changed so much! And what better way to tie it in with a stint on the Cobbles.
"I watched Corrie as a kid and it’s great to be back with some old friends both cast and crew. I’m loving having the opportunity to work with some quality Northern actors whose work I have long admired, particularly on such a complex character like Damon.”
Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeod added: "Having Ciaran on board is so exciting and especially because the character he is playing is so interesting. Damon is charming and likeable on the surface but we will soon see he is much more complicated than that as he goes on to have an explosive impact, both in Jacob’s life and beyond."
