Abi Franklin was given some agonising news after she ended up in hospital following a horror crash on Coronation Street.
Relapsed addict Abi, played by Sally Carman, secretly gave birth to a baby boy after being high on drugs and alcohol.
And after abandoning her son, who was born premature at 28 weeks, she ended up back in hospital after crashing a sports car while escaping from a lock-up belonging to her drug dealer.
Abi was convinced to see her child by visiting neighbour Toyah Battersby, who discovered Abi's secret after a member of hospital staff let slip that she'd had a baby.
But just as the wayward mechanic listened to Abi and was asking to see her boy, a social worker arrived and told her she would need to fight to be his mum and faced a court battle.
Abi, who didn't know she was pregnant until was in labour, retorted that she didn't want her son before breaking down in tears.
But on Friday she was told he was fighting for life and needed an operation.
Corrie viewers are now predicting that Toyah, who has yearned to be a mum, could adopt the child either with fiance Imran Habeeb or on her own following the news that actor Charlie De Melo has reportedly quit Coronation Street after five years.
@priya_uk asked on Twitter: "So...are Imran and Toyah going to adopt Abi's baby?
@Wee_Westie28 said: "I think Toyah will adopt Imran and Abi’s baby. #Corrie #CoronationStreet @itvcorrie
And they suggested: "So I’m guessing that’s how Imran leaves and Toyah will adopt the baby?"
@JohnnyT_Dorset agreed: "Can see it coming a mile off."
Imran slept with grieving mother Abi following the end of the trial for her son Seb's murder last year.
The pair have both kept their secret liaison from Toyah and Abi's husband Kevin- but their other halves do both know that they have cheated.
Toyah recently proposed as she wants them to become an official unit before adopting their foster daughter Elsie.
Elsie was a victim of physical and mental abuse, which ultimately led her to be placed in Toyah and Imran's care by social services in October.
But viewers had puzzled that, despite her being mentioned, there hadn't been a sighting of her in the soap for a while.
@penniless_poet commented: "Elsie, Elsie - oh yeah I remember, she's the invisible child that never comes out of her bedroom that Imran and Toyah are apparently fostering."
So they were delighted to catch a glimpse of her watching TV as Imran cooked them 'cheesy beans' for tea.
@angenevs commented with a smiley emoji: "Elsie allowed out of her bedroom."
@RyanGTweetsTV said: "Elsie is so cute."
And @corriedalexo said: "Awww Elsie is so cute."
