ITV Coronation Street fans recognise character as Benidorm star makes surprise appearance

Coronation Street fans immediately recognised a huge Benidorm star in the most recent episode of the soap.

The Cobbles already has one former Benidorm actor, Tony Maudsley, on the show. But on Friday's episode, another cast member made a surprise appearance.

As Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon) hosted a special press event as part of her campaign to become a local councillor, she was interrupted by rival Bernard Barnes. Bernard stole the limelight as he brought along two footballers to the event, leaving Maria furious.

Bernard was played by the creator of Benidorm, Derren Litten and fans watching the show took to Twitter to share their surprise at seeing the Benidorm star on the show, reports the Mirror.

One said: "That bloke is the creator of Benidorm comedy #Corrie."

A second added: "It’s @DerrenLitten, the creator of Benidorm on #Corrie."

A third tweeted: "Just spotted you on #Corrie."

And a fourth said: "Shame no onscreen reunion with @TonyMaudsley1 #DREAMTEAM."

Derren announced his appearance in the ITV soap, just hours before his scenes aired.

He said: "Bernard Barnes makes a brief appearance on @itvcorrie this evening (and a bit more on Monday). I can’t express how honoured I am to be even a speck on dust on a timeline that is the longest-running television soap opera in the world - Coronation Street."

Samia previously spoke of her character's huge political ambition. She said: "After what happened to Maria's son, Liam, in the summer with his asthma, it's happened organically. I get why she's doing it.

"She's in this for the right reasons, so I think Maria has integrity and would probably make a much better councillor than [election rival] Sally Metcalfe, who is driven by status and feeling important. But maybe I'm biased."
