Coronation Street fans couldn't believe what they were seeing and hearing as it was revealed that Spider Nugent is working as an undercover police officer. In scenes aired on the ITV soap on Monday night (September 12), the returning character's real secret was finally outed when he was confronted by DS Swain.
Earlier in the episode, Corrie fans saw Spider, played by Martin Hancock, declared his love for Toyah Habeeb. The character, played by Georgia Taylor, had been left furious with her former flame when he revealed he was married. But during the latest trip to Weatherfield, he told her his marriage was over.
As they kissed on the balcony, agreeing to keep their relationship under wraps until after Toyah's murder trial, Imran's furious mum Saira was seen staring up at them. She was then seen telling DS Swain about Toyah's new relationship and when she asked for names, she told her that she didn't have his real name but that he's known as Spider.
DS Swain's demeanour quickly changed and later, she was seen confronting Spider and he was asked for information on Toyah. Corrie viewers were soon flocking to social media as they were left reeling by the soap's latest revelation. @rozlaws tweeted: "Ooh! Now that’s a twist I didn’t see coming. #corrie."
@caseylangleyR22 echoed: "Wow, spider is a cop, I never saw that coming! #Corrie." @Ockeghem1497 wrote: "Spider's a cop? WTF? LOL!!! #corrie." While @mishybabez_ added: "I knew it! I knew Spider was an undercover cop. Cannot wait for Toyah's reaction eek! #Corrie."
But others weren't so convinced. @sarahlicity said: "The real Spider Nugent of our hearts would NEVER become a cop. F**kin hell. #Corrie." @tracytcb complained: "What a joke #Corrie has become. Spider Nugent an undercover police officer. Good grief! Never seen anything so ridiculous in my life."
As the big reveal sunk in, some Corrie fans couldn't help but joke about the street's resident officer, PC Craig Tinker, and how he now has competition. John wrote on Facebook: "We have PC Craig Tinker and now also Detective Constable Nugent, 2 of the least likely coppers going." Jessica penned: "Maybe there will be two coppers in Weatherfield now, not just the one covering every incident there is."
And while DS Swain may be asking for information on Toyah now, many of the soap's fans don't think this is who the recently returned character is supposed to be keeping an eye on. @mikepriestley13 tweeted: "Spider is a detective.. he’s undercover on griff #Corrie." @Gillianapply said; "So now we know the point of the spider and griff storyline! Nice one corrie! #corrie." Lynne wrote on Facebook: "I reckon he's watching Griff." Sue echoed: "I think he's watching Griff, not Toyah."
