Coronation Street fans appear to have been left shouting at their tellies as Gail Platt came close to discovering at least some of the truth about her brother, Stephen. During the Boxing Day trip to Weatherfield, viewers of the ITV soap saw Gail become suspicious of Stephen - again - after talking to Elaine Jones.
Fans have been desperate for Stephen to be outed for months now as he tries to scam his mother, Audrey Roberts, out of her life savings while also killing innocent Leo Thompkins in the process. But Gail's latest suspicions about Stephen started on Christmas Day when he failed to buy any lavish gifts for his family despite being a successful businessman in Italy.
But as viewers know, Stephen has lost all his money and has been trying to pay his ex-wife, Gabrielle, back. As they gathered in the Bistro for Christmas dinner, David wasted no time in calling out his uncle for his gift - a travel pillow for him and wife Shona to share - and his lack of present for his birthday.
The next day, Stephen headed over to David's when the barber spotted a gift on the table and immediately thought it was for him. Stephen went along with the lie, despite being given the hipflask by potential new love interest Elaine. But later, Gail saw Elaine buying whiskey for Stephen in the Bistro and quickly realised that Stephen had secretly re-gifted David his present from Elaine.
And it wasn't long before Gail was seen confronting Stephen, in front of Elaine, after she made a call to his estranged wife who told her all about Stephen stealing from her company and running up huge debts. But Elaine was quick to defend her new friend saying he was being coercively controlled by Gabrielle.
Stephen then went along with Elaine's tale and told Gail that Gabrielle has been denying him access to his own money. Gail believed her brother's lies and suggested they got to the police or at least tell Audrey what was going on. However, Stephen convinced Gail that he doesn't feel ready to report Gabrielle to the police and Gail also agreed to keep their mum in the dark.
But Corrie fans were quick to flock to social media to ask for an end to Stephen's lies after he was almost caught out by Gail. @KimberleyW1983 said: "Can this Stephen storyline just end, I beg #corrie." @Joosh1e tweeted: "I'm a bit late.. but corrie's stephen is annoying me, just expose him! #corrie."
@andyroe67 commented: "Please, please, please end the Stephen story, it's becoming embarrassing." @haleybee39 wrote: "Please someone catch Steven so we can end his storyline." @57anderson added: "Time for Stephen to pay for Leo’s death."
Others, however, were quick to issue a warning to Gail over her interference. @mobrees said: "Be careful Gail! We don’t want Stephen killing you off #Corrie." @j_raff2021 echoed: "Be careful Gail, Stephen is a murderer. #Corrie."
