There was a shock for fans of Coronation Street last week when Stu Carpenter's past was finally exposed. Viewers of the ITV soap haven't known much about the character since his first appearance last year but the appearance of his ex-wife changed all of that.
In scenes aired on Friday night (August 5), Stu, played by Bill Fellows, was revealed to be a murderer. He was horrified to see his ex-wife, Lucy, at Speed Daal after he was made front and centre of an article in The Gazette. Lucy ordererd Stu to stay away from their daughter Bridget before dropping the bombshell secret from Stu’s past as she reminded her ex of Charlie Walter, the young girl he murdered.
As Lucy strode out of the restaurant, Stu protested his innocence, explaining to Yasmeen and Alya that he was wrongly imprisoned for the murder of a young girl. While he protested his innocence, viewers were left wondering who to believe and during scenes aired on Monday night (August 8), Stu hit the bottle and was found on the streets by Kelly Neelan.

At the hospital, feeling worthless and insisting Kelly is best off without him, Stu barked that she’s a nuisance who’s not welcome anymore and the teen left feeling upset and rejected. As Kelly fled, Corrie fans agreed with her that Stu is innocent and came up with a theory that Stu is covering for someone else over the murder, and they think that person is his daughter.
But as anything can happen in soapland, some fans of the Salford-based soap think that Stu could be involved in Kelly's exit after it was reported Millie Gibson is set to leave the role after four years.
Shirley Fiander wrote on Facebook: "I believe Kelly is leaving Corrie…if she dies for what ever reason will Stu get the blame? He has been accused of killing a young girl a few years ago… I believe he is innocent though." Melissa Elton echoed: "I’ve heard Kelly is leaving coronation street on a big exit I wonder if he actually did do it and Kelly will be next would be a good twist to it all."
Anne Whitmore said: "Poor Kelly… Stu doesn’t mean this I’m sure. However, I am wondering, now we know Kelly is leaving, if all this is building up to her exit! Hope they don’t kill her off, would be so pointless after we’ve been through all those great storylines with this character." Elizabeth Mcnicholas added: "I am wondering if this is going to be Kelli's exit story... she finds out who and gets killed by the person who really did it.... Stu will get thrown back into jail...."
Meanwhile, other soap watchers were pleading for thing sot change for both the characters. Joyce Overton said: "Well i liked stu character wish corrie let some characters have a happy storyline." Liz Weightman commented: "Can someone push a 'happy' story button for the script writer's please....we need a few laughs & feel good moments & not stressful stuff bouncing from one family to another."
Carol Coward wrote: "Kelly and Stu the best characters Coronation Street have had for such a long time and both great actors - please don’t spoil it by a stupid storyline!"
