Coronation Street fans have wondered if they have seen Evelyn Plummer's last appearance in Weatherfield after she was seen with her case and dog heading for the tram stop. The popular character, played by Dame Maureen Lipman in the ITV soap, appeared to have enough earlier this week after a stint volunteering at a charity shop.
Evelyn was only helping out after Roy Cropper forced her into it when she mistakingly took shop worker Joy's coat from her believing it to be Roy's late wife Hayley's red anorak which had accidently been sent off to the charity shop among other items of her clothing and Roy's belongings.
Having gone back to the shop, Evelyn spotted Joy in a red coat and managed to get it off her before taking it back to Roy who confirmed it wasn't Hayley's. Joy later came to Roys Rolls were both Roy and Evelyn apologised for what happened. And when Joy mentioned they needed another volunteer at the shop, Roy put Evelyn forward.

But as Evelyn headed to the show, it was clear she wasn't happy and struggled to get on with Joy. At one point she even had a cricket bat in her hand before dumping it in a box and walking out. She was then seen arriving at the Corner Shop where bought a bottle of booze.
However, her plans to drink it alone were quickly scuppered when Chesney Brown arrived, insisting that Evelyn would have to look after Hope Stape while Fiz Stape and grandson Tyrone Dobbs were at the cinema. She then left but later, Asha Alahan ran into Evelyn taking Cerberus and her suitcase to the tram station.
And viewers were soon flocking to social media. @HannahF_24 said: "Is that Evelyn’s last scene?! The best character they’ve had for donkeys years and she leaves like that? #corrie." @WiniBoansi asked: "Where is Evelyn off to? #Corrie."
@j_raff2021 echoed: "Wait, is Evelyn's leaving?! #Corrie." @MJ_JJ061215 tweeted: "I hope Evelyn isn't away from the street for too long. I'll miss her sarcastic wit. #Corrie." @DionPetrie wrote: "I hope Evelyn isn’t leaving! #Corrie." @OliReading added: "#Corrie is Evelyn running away when she's supposed to be doing all these jobs including babysitting??"
But fans need not worry as Evelyn will be back. Maureen has temporarily been written out of the soap so she can appear in a new play. Earlier this month Corrie stars past and present Denise Welch, Angela Lonsdale, Jane Hazlegrove, and Sally Dynevor were all smiles as they posed with Maureen following her performance at Hope Mill Theatre in Rose.
The one-woman production is described as "a moving reminder of some of the harrowing events that shaped the century." Following a stint in Manchester, Maureen and the play has moved on to London. "I’ve got a little holiday from Corrie. I’m going back, because I like Corrie, I like the people," she told Rob Rinder and Charlotte Hawkins on Good Morning Britain last month.
But earlier this week she was once again watched by someone very familiar. Jamie Kenna, who left the soap as Phill Whittaker earlier this year, took to social media to gush over his former co-star's performance. He posted a selfie of the pair as well as a poster featuring Maureen on a poster outside Park Theatre.
"What can I say about this woman and this piece of Theatre!? She is an utter legend and it is a masterclass in performance and writing!" the former soap star typed. He went on: "Maureen effortlessly glides through this difficult subject matter, delivering every moment with a class, humour & timing only she can deliver…..I know this as I’ve seen it first hand and it’s mesmerising.
"She has you in tears one minute and hysterics the next. She also does that brilliant thing only people of her ilk can do, she makes you feel like she’s talking to you personally! On top of all this, she is alone onstage for 2 hours and 10 minutes with bearly time for a breath.
"Blown away is an understatement. Plus the fact that I get to call this genius my good friend, makes me pretty dam lucky. Congratulations to all involved @scottlecrass for brilliant direction and #martinsherman for writing a masterpiece." He ended the post by saying: "I urge you to go and see this play…..then you can say you did!! Love you Mo xxx."
