ITV Coronation Street Claire Sweeney's swift exit sparks fans to plead 'please don't'

Coronation Street viewers issued a demand after Claire Sweeney's swift exit in last night's episode.

The former Brookside star made her eagerly-awaited Cobbles debut as Cassandra Plummer in Wednesday's programme. The troubled character is a recovering drug addict and Claire underwent a dramatic transformation to play the role.

The 52-year-old told the ECHO and other press why she relished the chance to portray a character worlds apart from her usual glamorous self. She said: "I want her to be so far removed from me and the minute I get the clothes on, the leggings, the converse, the cap and looking really rough, I then become that character."

Claire vowed Cassie will cause havoc in Weatherfield as she sought help from her mum, Evelyn, to get clean. She also wanted to reconnect with her son, Tyrone Dobbs, but things have been particularly complicated as Evelyn has told the character, played by Alan Halsall, that his mum is dead.

Claire's arrival on the soap has been met with widespread acclaim as fans praised a powerful heart to heart between Evelyn and Cassie in hospital earlier this week. However, her first stint has proved to be short-lived after Cassie and Evelyn exited Weatherfield in last night's show as they aim to get on top of the character's addiction struggles.

Evelyn said: "I will help you but neither of us are leaving the flat until you are clean and ready to meet your son." Claire told the ECHO and other press that she is set to return to the show later this summer and fans following the show on Twitter can't wait for Cassie and Evelyn's full time return to Weatherfield.

Viewers took to the social media platform to single out Evelyn star, Dame Maureen Lipmann, as they hoped her time away from the Cobbles will be short-lived.

Carole commented: "Please don't be away too long Maureen."

Jamie said: "This is Evelyn's temporary leaving story. She can't come back soon enough. Lipman's been superb these last few weeks and has been on screen a lot more than usual"

Nikki tweeted: "Hope Evelyn & Cassie aren't gone for too long. Dame Maureen Lipman has been even more brilliant than usual this week"
