ITV Coronation Street Christmas preview as soap's boss admits he 'cried' over festive scenes

Expect a "fun, warm, and family-orientated" Christmas on the cobbles this year as the residents of Coronation Street escape the usual drama and heartache this festive season. The ITV soap's boss Iain MacLeod has even admitted to 'crying twice' over the upcoming scenes.

While he hasn't given too much away, Corrie fans are allowed to know that Tyrone Dobbs and Fiz Stape will take centre stage this Christmas. And a winter wedding looks set to be on the cards if what's coming up in Weatherfield is anything to go by.

This week, viewers will see Hope returning to school following her suspension after she brought a hammer into school to reinact one of her dad John Stape's murders. But it’s awkward when the school counsellor quizzes Fiz and Tyrone about their family background. Deciding it’s time he put a ring on it, Tyrone gets down on one knee and proposes.

As Fiz and Tyrone celebrate their engagement, they’re interrupted by the arrival of the journalist who wrote the John Stape book. Apologising, he hands Fiz a bag and explains it contains all his research into her serial killer ex and he wants her to have it so that it never falls into the wrong hands.

Next week, as Hope listens to her John Stape tape, completely spellbound, Fiz and Tyrone are completely oblivious and Tyrone is soon heard revealing his surprise wedding plans to Kevin and Abi. But when he shows them the dress he chose with Gemma, Abi tells him it’s hideous and Fiz will hate it. Beth ends up agreeing to make some alterations to the dress in the hope that Fiz will like it.

Discussing Weatherfield's upcoming Christmas celebrations, Corrie producer Iain told the Manchester Evening News and other press during a recent trip to the Salford-based set that they'll be "fun, warm, family-orientated," before adding: "Corrie historically has always done that. We, a few years ago, went a little bit 'Die Hard' with the Gary Windass, Shona Platt and the funfair story which we absolutely loved and allowed us to do this brilliant thriller-ish trailer for it and it was all very exciting.

"But I think we are right in our wheelhouse now with this year's Christmas. It's got loads of comedy in it, lots of family fun, loads of warmth and I cried twice in the viewing of it. I'm not given to tears but it was so moving and lovely. And not moving in a sad way just moving in a warm your cockles way."

Iain added: "So I think fans are going to live it and Fiz and Tyrone are the centre of it and it's just really good fun. Just the right amount of silly, loads of brilliant writing in it, the performances in it are obviously exemplary as they are across the show generally but Alan [Halsall] and Jennie [McAlpine] are absolutely marvelous in it and the kids are great.

"So it just feels totally Christmassy, totally Corrie and just a really warm, good-spirited end to the year for us."
