ITV's drama Doc Martin is drawing to an end after nearly a decade. Following the life of the grumpy doctor, Doc Martin who is played by Martin Clunes, the tenth series will be the last series of the show. It will begin on Wednesday, September 7 on ITV at 9pm.
However, this will not be the last of Doc Martin just yet. ITV has confirmed it will be airing a Christmas special of Doc Martin as a "final farewell" to the well-loved series. You can read about all the ITV dramas coming this autumn here. The Christmas 2022 special does not yet have an air date but also airing at the same time will be a special documentary about Doc Martin.
Called Doc Martin-A Celebration, the documentary will highlight the amazing longevity and impact both locally and around the world Doc Martin has had over the years, as well as giving the audience a glimpse behind the scenes of the final series with the cast and crew.
Martin Clunes, who has played Doc Martin since series one, spoke about what it was like saying goodbye to the series. He said: "It just felt right for everyone involved. We would love to come to Cornwall and work here but we can’t do every job down here. It certainly felt, with this many episodes in, coming up with the stories, not just the individual stories but the through lines with the characters across the series and their journeys throughout it, it has just been done now, and I think we would be repeating ourselves. It just closes the circle."
He added: "I will never get a job as good as this again I know that in terms of what it has done for us personally, but also just in the sheer joy of it, not being in a city to film it, and being allowed to make something funny in front of a camera, which is my favourite work experience."
