ITV announce death of 'dedicated' colleague in Qatar on live TV before Wales v USA World Cup game

ITV has announced that one of its team working on the World Cup in Qatar has died. Technical director Roger Pearce, who worked for the network for more than 40 years, was working at his eighth World Cup.

His death was announced ahead of Wales' opening World Cup game against the USA on Monday, November 21, with presenter Mark Pougatch issuing a tribute just moments before kick-off.

Breaking away from the pre-match coverage, Pougatch said: "We have some very sad news to bring you from here in Qatar. ITV's technical director Roger Pearce, who was here embarking on his eighth World Cup, has sadly passed away. Roger and his team are the brilliant people who bring you the pictures into your home and make it all happen. Roger was a hugely respected figure in the TV sport broadcasting industry."

He added: "For ITV, he's been instrumental in the logistical planning and delivery of Rugby World Cups as well as football World Cups and the Euros. He always had a smile on his face and left a smile on your face. He was utterly dedicated, professional, charming and hugely popular. He'll be missed by so many people inside the industry and at home."

Pearce's cause of death has not been disclosed.
