Items banned from Love Island villa and rules to follow - from fake tan to social ban

Love Island returns this evening for its second winter series after first being introduced back in 2020. It will see a brand new line-up of singletons looking for love in a swanky villa located in Cape Town, South Africa.

A big change for this series is that Maya Jama has taken over presenting duties, while ITV bosses have extended their safeguarding support and training, including making sure islanders disable their social media accounts whilst on the show for the first time.

But every year, there are also limits on what islanders can bring into the villa and certain rules they must follow.

Back in 2019, contestant Sherif Lanre was even evicted from the villa for 'breaking the villa rules'. With the help of Vera Clinic, we've taken a look at what contestants are banned from doing and taking onto the show with them...

Banned items

Fake tan

Contestant Jess Gale stained the bedsheets with fake tan in 2020 (ITV)

In a TikTok video shared by Chloe Burrows, the runner-up in 2021, she revealed that fake tan was banned in the villa.

Since the bedroom is a big part of the show, producers did not want the white bed sheets to get destroyed by unsightly fake tan stains so the Islanders are banned from adding a golden glow.

Beauty products

Since Love Island is typically sponsored by retailers specialising in health and beauty, the lucky contestants will be stocked up with a range of beauty, skincare, sun cream, and male grooming products to use.

The products tend to be on display for promotional purposes so the contestants do not need to bring any of their own personal beauty products with them.

Mobile phones

Personal phones are banned (ITV)

Although each contestant is given their own phone on the show to take photos and receive the famous 'I've got a text!' messages, their personal phones are strictly banned from the villa.

And for the first time this year, the show has announced a drastic move banning islanders' families and friends from monitoring or posting on the contestant's phones.

Books, magazines or newspapers

As well as mobile phones it is no shock that islanders are also cut off from the outside world and are not allowed access to any newspapers, magazines or books during their free time - meaning they really do need to be grafting 24/7.

Branded clothes

The islanders are lucky enough to be given a continuous flow of clothes to wear as part of partnerships with the show's sponsors.

This means that they are not allowed to wear any of their own clothes if they contain identifiable brands, logos, or slogans.

In past years, I Saw It First has sponsored Love Island but from last year, the show works alongside eBay to promote wearing more sustainable, preloved clothing. Last season's 4th place contestant, Tasha Ghouri, is now eBay's first preloved ambassador.

Watches

There are no clocks in the villa (ITV)

Most of us have never experienced life without the time but for the Love Islanders, they have to adapt to life with no concept of time.

With no watches and clocks allowed inside, it has also been reported that the time is covered up on the oven and the hot tub.

Past islanders have said they have to use the sun to gauge the time of day and are told when to sleep and wake up by the producers.

WiFi

Although it makes sense considering that contestants are not permitted to have any form of contact with the outside world, there is no WiFi connection in the villa.

Amy Hart from season 5 of the show revealed that the phones they were given are "jail-broken" as everything but the camera and texting messaging are strictly off limits.

Rules

No nudity

Contestants have to shower in their undwear (ITV)

Technically the villa is a public place, so indecent exposure is a big no-no.

This rule even applies in the shower - where contestants must still wear their underwear or swimsuits when washing.

Intoxication

Their alcoholic drinks are limited (ITV/REX/Shutterstock)

If you've ever wondered why the islanders never seem to get drunk during the parties and evenings, it's because their alcohol limit is restricted.

Each islander is permitted to have two glasses of wine or two glasses of beer during a party evening.

Food is also supplied and producers are able to take shopping list requests from the contestants, with past islanders sharing that they were sometimes treated to takeaways.

Unprotected sex

ITV2 bosses are strict on practising safe sex. Islanders are not allowed to have unprotected sex in the villa under no circumstances.

Love Island branded condoms are plentiful in the villa and contestants are even offered STI tests before entering the villa.

No smoking

Following a huge amount of complaints surrounding Islanders smoking in the 2017 series, producers cracked down.

There's now a designated smoking area outside the villa with a limit of one Islander at a time in a bid to refrain contestants picking up a social smoking habit.

No masturbation

While Islanders often get under the sheets in their coupling, no solo acts are allowed on the premises.

Offensive language and violence

Ahead of entering the villa, Islanders will receive guidance and training around mutually respectful behaviour in relationships.

Participants will be offered resource links to read up on, in advance of meeting their fellow Islanders, to help them identify negative behaviours in relationships and understand the behaviour patterns associated with controlling and coercive behaviour.

Contributors on the show continue to be offered video training and guidance covering inclusive language around disability, sexuality, race and ethnicity, and microaggressions.

In 2019, Sherif Lanre was kicked off the show for accidentally kicking fellow islander Molly-Mae in the groin area, then joking about it using bad language, including the c-word, he told The Sun.

Love Island returns to ITV2 tonight at 9pm.
