Rome prosecutors have initiated an investigation against Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and two government ministers for their involvement in repatriating a Libyan warlord wanted by the International Criminal Court in the Hague. The Italian premier made this announcement on Tuesday.
The investigation was disclosed by Meloni in a video shared on social media, where she mentioned the accusations of aiding and abetting Ossama Anjiem, also known as Ossama al-Masri. Along with the Prime Minister, the justice and interior ministers, as well as an under-secretary, are subjects of the investigation.
Meloni's government has faced criticism from various quarters, including the opposition, human rights organizations, and the ICC, for allowing al-Masri to be released on a technicality. The warlord had been apprehended in Turin on an international court warrant.
