Italian Open: Holger Rune stuns Novak Djokovic to storm into semi-finals

Holger Rune caused a major upset at the Italian Open as he defeated the defending champion Novak Djokovic in a thrilling three-set battle. The 20-year-old Danish player secured his spot in the semi-finals with a hard-fought 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 victory over the world number one.

Rune had previously outlasted Djokovic in three sets during last year's Paris Masters final, and he started the match in strong form. He made an impressive start by breaking Djokovic's serve in the opening game. Demonstrating his aggressive playing style and employing delicate drop shots, Rune quickly raced ahead to a 4-1 lead.

Djokovic appeared uncomfortable between points and had already admitted to dealing with a physical issue the previous day.

Despite missing a late opportunity to extend his lead, Rune managed to close out the first set, leaving some sections of the crowd in disbelief over Djokovic's struggles as a six-time champion.

In the second set, Djokovic took a mid-match painkiller, which seemed to re-energize him. The 35-year-old Serbian player roared back to life, breaking Rune's serve and holding his own to take a commanding 5-2 lead.

However, Rune's composure was tested when he lost his temper over a line call by the chair umpire. Despite a spirited fightback and a break of his own, Rune ultimately surrendered the set after a prolonged rain delay disrupted the momentum.

The decider began with fierce exchanges from both players, showcasing their ferocious hitting abilities. However, it was Rune who capitalised on Djokovic's serve, seizing a commanding 4-0 lead. Demonstrating dominance on the court, Rune closed out the match by winning his own service game in a rare spell of sunshine.

This loss means that Djokovic will relinquish his top-ranking position to Carlos Alcaraz before the French Open.

Djokovic will now turn his focus to the upcoming Grand Slam tournament, where he will aim to claim a record-breaking 23rd men's singles title, putting him ahead of his rival Rafael Nadal.

In other matches at the Italian Open, Casper Ruud and Francisco Cerundolo are set to compete in a later quarter-final. In the women's draw, Paula Badosa will face 2017 French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko, while reigning Roland Garros champion Iga Swiatek is scheduled to take on Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in a highly anticipated clash.
